Researchers built an artificial neuron that functions like a human brain cell, and graphene made it possible.
Brain-computer interfaces will be here sooner than we think.
Hopefully Elon is right and they can help solve AI alignment.
This work paves the way towards "immensely efficient computers built on biological principles which could interface directly with living cells."

The neuron uses graphene to sense dopamine levels in the surrounding environment and adjust the neuron’s firing behavior.
Graphene’s atomic-scale sensitivity lets it "feel" your brain chemistry converting real-time shifts into electrical signals.
The neuron is bio-compatible, and:
– Spikes like a real cell (120 mV, pJ energy)
– Interfaces directly with brain tissue
– Is chemically tunable via dopamine/Na⁺
– Enforces hard physical constraints (refractory, saturation)

Reminder to take your vitamin D and continue moving this winter.
We have long known that each reduce neurodegeneration on their own, but this new study suggests that they likely synergize, working together to keep your brain healthy.
Exercise is also a powerful way to prevent neurodegeneration. Countless studies have shown that the fittest among us remain mentally sharp deep into old age.
Among things like improved vascular health, some of this protection comes from brain supporting molecules released during exercise.
Many of these molecules, like BDNF, IL-6, irsin, or IGF-1, have their activity in the brain enhanced by vitamin D.
Exercise is likely more neuroprotective when vitamin D levels are optimal.
Vitamin D supplementation is likely more neuroprotective when you are also exercising.
Vitamin D functions like a hormone in the body. Among many other effects, it switches the immune system into an anti-inflammatory mode, including the immune cells in the brain.
Neuroinflammation is widely recognized as a primary cause of neurodegeneration.
Through its anti-inflammatory role, vitamin D functions as a neuroprotective molecule.
Instead of (or at least in addition to) worrying about Tylenol, maybe we should be looking to the gut for a better understanding of Autism.
This work has profound implications. It opens the door for therapeutic potential and empowers parents.
Interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, dietary changes, and fecal microbiota transplantation could rebalance the gut microbiota, reduce gut permeability, and dampen neuro-inflammation.
Not only can this reduce the GI symptoms common for those with ASD, but may even reduce their behavioural and neurological symptoms.
"Sharon et al. provided evidence of causality: when gut microbiota samples from human ASD donors were transplanted into germ-free mice, those mice developed behavioral traits analogous to ASD (repetitive behaviors, social deficits."
Mice receiving microbiota from neurotypical donors, did not exhibit these behaviors.
Grossi et al. showed that long-term administration of high-dose multi-strain probiotics led to notable improvements in core ASD symptoms including enhanced social interaction and communication.
In this review, Petropoulos et al., uncovered a clear association between altered gut microbiome, broader gut issues, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Mind, Body, Finance.
Goldman knows that they are linked. Athletes who have rigorously trained their mind and body are better decision makers and leaders.
