If a data dictionary isn't available, ask your DBA to grant you these database permissions:
+ SELECT (to learn the data); and
+ VIEW DEFINITION (to learn the table design) #SqlServer #FirstTime
Pro-tip: provide the DBA with database owner's approval of your permission request.
If today is your first time coding a query for a SQL Server database, code your query, then ask a DBA how she would code it ... and then ask how they are different.

Suggestion: if you're a SQL Server person who wants to become an expert on a new feature with potential, start blogging and presenting about @sqlopsstudio and its extensions. Make feature suggestions and document bugs. It's a the perfect stage right now for you to champion.
