Christopher Yates, 30, has had his sentence increased to six years after shaking his baby son so violently that he suffered catastrophic brain injuries, was left blind and is unlikely ever to walk.
On October 5, 2025, Yates attacked his baby son after consuming 11 pints of Foster's lager and taking cocaine. He had been granted sole custody just three weeks earlier, having established paternity through a test after the child's birth. The baby had previously been removed from his mother's care and placed with foster carers.
Relatives had raised concerns about his drinking and ability to care for the baby, saying he became easily frustrated with the child, failed to dress him properly and left dirty nappies and empty alcohol cans scattered around his flat.
At around 2am, the baby woke crying and Yates became increasingly frustrated, shouting at him to shut up before shaking him five times with such force that the injuries were compared in court to those suffered during a high-speed car accident. Yates did not call emergency services until 8.15am, more than six hours later, initially claiming the baby had fallen from a chair.
The child's foster mother, who had cared for him from birth, said doctors had initially been unsure whether he would survive. In her victim impact statement, she described how Yates had robbed the little boy of the life he should have had, leaving the family devastated. She said they would never give up on him and would continue providing the care and support he needed.
In July 2026, Yates appeared at Newcastle Crown Court, where the court heard about his ADHD, depressive disorder and traumatic upbringing before he admitted causing a child to suffer serious physical harm and was jailed for four years. The Solicitor General subsequently referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient sentence scheme, arguing that four years failed to reflect the severity of the baby's injuries.
Representing the Solicitor General, Gemma White told the court: "There was very significant use of force against a six-month-old baby which resulted in catastrophic injury." Yates's barrister, Rachel Hedworth, argued that his personal circumstances had been properly considered at sentencing, highlighting the limited professional support he had received and suggesting earlier intervention might have prevented the assault.
On Thursday, October 29, 2026, Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, sitting with Lord Justice Jeremy Baker and Mr Justice Wall, increased Yates's sentence to six years in prison. Baroness Carr said: "The sentence imposed by the judge was not only lenient but unduly so."

Following my post highlighting concerns about the rapidly changing demographics of a Wycombe school, the entire local political establishment has lined up to attack me.
The mayor, Imran Hussain called me 'irresponsible and wrong'. The Labour MP yesterday said the remarks were 'divisive' and 'disrespectful'. The local Lib Dems said it's 'dog whistle politics.'
The same happened in Dartford - the Labour MP said it was 'dangerous'. Reform's council leader attacked me for 'focusing on the skin colour', saying it was 'quite astonishing'.
The school in Wycombe has gone from 60% White British to 30% in ten years.
Dartford? 52% ten years ago, 7% now. SEVEN percent.
White British students have almost gone extinct in that school.
Outlining concerns about the rapidly changing demographics of our country, and the obvious impact mass immigration has had on that is entirely legitimate.
And if Labour, Reform, Lib Dem politicians think it's not?
Who cares. Restore Britain is going to speak for the millions and millions of Brits who have been silenced on this for too long.
