14th Feb 1400 is given as the day on which King Richard II died, probably at Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire when he was 33 years old. The son of Edward the 'Black Prince', he was deposed by his cousin who took the throne as Henry IV.
Richard's 22 year reign had been a troubled and difficult affair; he was eventually taken into custody and held in the Tower of London. Although the evidence is limited, it seems that he was transferred at some point to Pontefract Castle.
