『らんま1/2 町内激闘篇』のあと、私とプログラマーの克さんの二人で開発を始めたのが『らんま1/2 爆烈乱闘篇』でした。 このゲームでは、基本ルールや登場キャラクターの選出を考え、全キャラクターの立ち絵も描きました（最終的な仕上げでは、各担当者にさらに調整してもらっています）。 アメリカ版のパッケージはインパクト抜群で、初めて見たときには思わず笑ってしまいました。あの強烈な印象は、今でも忘れられません。 一方、ヨーロッパ版には日本のアニメ『らんま1/2』の公式イラストが使われています。天道家の軒先に博打王キングが追加されているという、なんとも不思議なビジュアルです。 ちなみに、日本版パッケージ用には私も何パターンかラフを描いて提出しましたが、そのままの構図で制作するのは難しいとのことでした。 ただ、キャラクターを大勢登場させるという方向性は採用してもらいました。

『シュビビンマン3』の次に開発に関わったのが、SFCの『らんま1/2 町内激闘篇』です。 私は男乱馬、女らんま、シャンプーのドット絵を担当しました。 このゲームは海外版ではすべてのキャラクターが新しいデザインに描き直され、タイトルも『Street Combat』になりました。 私は外部スタッフだったので、変更の詳しい経緯は知りません。 当時は「海外ではこういうキャラクターの方が人気があるのかな？」と思っていました。

Anti-moe guys used to tell you to watch stuff like LOGH, Texhnolyze, and Gankutsuou. They used to have encyclopaedic knowledge of old anime OVA's and the staff behind them. Now they just tell you to watch Shounen and Berserk (the one seinen they know).

It did. Absolutely developed a ML/AI program to discern frame to frame movement of animated characters and how the lighting/shading should follow along. "KLaS". Developed in 2015. A full 7 years before Midjourney V1 dropped. 6 years before DALL-E dropped. That software generated bezier curves to control the lighting/shading. Then the curves were reviewed and massaged frame by frame by artists. It's important to distinguish the difference between that form of ML/AI and the exploitative abusive and harmful general AI generative software we're pushing back on right now. Machine Learning has been useful for decades. Nuance is key.
