The physical mass of a tree comes almost entirely from photosynthesis & CO₂. Throughout their lives a trees uses sunlight to transform CO₂ into glucose energy & oxygen. Photosynthesis was created by microscopic cyanobacteria 2.45 billion years ago & it took 1.6 billion years to fully oxygenate the earth in the Great Oxygenation Event. A single mature tree produces enough oxygen for at least 2 people each year. Forests cover 31% of all land area (deserts cover 33%-40% & mountainous areas cover 24%). Human settlements only cover 3% of land area.
