45 years ago today, on November 6, 1981, the Cars released Shake It Up, their fourth studio album, on Elektra.
Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes and David Robinson recorded it at Syncro Sound in Boston with Roy Thomas Baker, who had produced every Cars album to that point. It would be his last with the band.
Panorama had been darker and more experimental, and this time the Cars went back to the hooks. Ocasek pulled the title track from his stash of older, unrecorded songs, and "Shake It Up" became their first Top 10 single, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200 that December.
