More barbarism in Iran, this morning,as Amir-Hossein Maleki and Amir-Hossein Ebrahimi were executed by the Iranian dictatorship. These two 20-year-olds had been detained after the December uprising in Isfahan. Abhorrent public executions are used in dictatorships like Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea.
We might not be surprised by the savagery of the Mullahs or by dictatorships which routinely resort to barbarism.
But such macabre and grotesque spectacles should have no place in a democracy like the United States.
In 1849 Charles Dickens wrote to The Times after witnessing a public execution and said “I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits.”
Britain banned public executions in 1868. The death penalty has been banned in all cases since 1998.
In the case of Iran, tomorrow’s “No to Execution Tuesdays”campaign will be marked by political prisoners across 66 Iranian prisons who have staged weekly hunger strikes demanding the abolition of the death penalty.

At least 46 political prisoners and protesters have been executed in Iran since March 2026. More than 100 others remain on death row. The executions should end and those detained released.

La magnitud del uso de la pena de muerte en Irán por motivos políticos es alarmante. Amnistía Internacional registró al menos 2,159 ejecuciones en 2025, la cifra anual más alta que ha documentado en el país desde 1981.
En 2026, al menos 34 personas han sido ejecutadas en relación con las protestas de enero, incluidas cinco en apenas una semana, entre el 30 de septiembre y el 5 de octubre.
La información que he recibido revela además una dimensión especialmente preocupante para mi mandato. Al menos 46 presos políticos y manifestantes habrían sido ejecutados desde el 19 de marzo de 2026: 37 fueron detenidos durante protestas y nueve fueron perseguidos en relación con una supuesta afiliación a la oposición. Más de 100 personas permanecerían condenadas a muerte.
Delitos como baghi (rebelión armada), moharebeh (enemistad contra Dios) y efsad-e fel-arz (corrupción en la tierra) están siendo utilizados en casos en los que la protesta, la expresión política y la supuesta afiliación a la oposición se vinculan con cargos que pueden implicar la pena de muerte.
La historia hace imposible ignorar estas señales de alerta. En 1988, alrededor de 30,000 presos políticos fueron ejecutados o desaparecidos forzadamente en uno de los capítulos más oscuros de la historia reciente de Irán. El ex Relator Especial de la ONU Javaid Rehman concluyó posteriormente que las ejecuciones sumarias, arbitrarias y extrajudiciales, así como las desapariciones forzadas, constituyeron crímenes de lesa humanidad.
Irán debe detener inmediatamente las ejecuciones, conmutar las condenas a muerte, revisar los casos que no cumplan con las garantías de un juicio justo e investigar las denuncias de tortura.
La opinión política, la crítica, la protesta pacífica y la asociación nunca deben convertirse en delitos castigados con la pena de muerte.

Today, MEPs stood in solidarity with Iran’s political prisoners participating in the #NoToExecutionTuesdays campaign.
Since January 2024, what began with a number of prisoners has grown into a movement spanning 66 prisons across Iran.
Every Tuesday, prisoners on death row and political prisoners, go on hunger strike to make their voices heard. They chose Tuesday because it is the day prisoners are transferred to solitary confinement ahead of execution.
Their message is clear: #StopExecutionsInIran
Last week, @Ginitastar joined the hunger-striking prisoners in solidarity. Today, @SRfreedex_LMG joined the campaign by undertaking a hunger strike.
