OTD in 1943, the 'Wooden Horse' escape took place from Stalag Luft III.
Involving Eric Williams, Michael Codner, and Oliver Philpot, they dug a tunnel from the middle of the compound, hiding the entrance with a wooden vaulting horse while they dug.

Codner and Williams escaped together, reaching Sweden via Stettin, while Philpot travelled alone, also making for Sweden, via Danzig.
Williams would release a book, entitled "The Wooden Horse", about their escapes in 1949. Shortly after a film (see photo) of the same name.
Our very first episodes of the entire podcast were on this escape, and can be found below.

Did you know that Room 900 was a highly secret section of MI9, operating quite separately from SOE?
Tasked with sending agents behind enemy lines to support escape and evasion work, it was headed for a time by none other than Airey Neave himself.

Airey Neave’s daring escape from Colditz was just one chapter...
MI9’s work also involved building vast escape lines across Europe and conducting major intelligence operations.
I’m proud to tell the full story of this secret unit in my book: amzn.to/3DFObMd

The courage of MI9 agents and guides still inspires me deeply.
These heroic men and women risked everything to help over 35,000 Allied airmen and soldiers escape to safety in WWII, giving them a second chance to fight on.
And many did.
True heroes of their very secret war...

This is an MI9 escape compass: a tiny 0.5-inch ‘star’ rotor housed in a waterproof pouch, complete with a cotton strap for wearing around the neck.
Issued with the Beadon flying suit and evasion kits, this miniature compass was vital for Allied airmen, helping them navigate to neutral territory during WW2.
