Kamal Haasan’s latest film announcement has landed straight into a political storm!
Ahead of his 72nd birthday, Kamal unveiled #Sandiyar, the title of his new film directed by S. U. Arun Kumar and produced by his Raj Kamal Films International (RKFI).
The first-look poster features a rugged, violent-looking Kamal alongside a blood-stained car. In one of the tags it says - “Revenge can only be settled in blood!”
But the title has a controversial history of its own! 23 years ago, #Sandiyar triggered a major political and caste-related controversy in Tamil Nadu. With Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister, protests forced Kamal to change the title to #Virumandi ahead of its 2004 Pongal release.
Now, history seems to be repeating itself!
Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT), led by K. Krishnasamy, which spearheaded the opposition back then, has once again raised the red flag. The party argues that the title glorifies dominant caste groups and risks encouraging caste-based violence and the dreaded ‘aruval’ culture in southern Tamil Nadu.
At a press conference today, PT issued a strong warning: “The film will neither be allowed to commence shooting nor be released in theatres!”
Will Kamal Haasan stand his ground this time, or will #Sandiyar title be once again changed ?
