I just discovered that macOS 14.x adds an invisible character to its screenshot filenames just before the AM/PM that breaks compatibility with older image editors and other software Unicode 8239: "Narrow No-Break Space" (U+202F) Anybody know a member of the macOS dev team?

I did some research about how browsers obey variation selectors and forced fonts and summarised them around here: (tl;dr: yes, inconsistent even for glyphs that are told to be "monochromatizable" by Unicode standard.) xitter.cf/myfonj/status/17585533…
Two-by-two matrix of screenshots of same web page containing bunch of Emoji characters that should all be rendered in black in combination of browser (Chrome, Firefox) and OS (Windows 10 and Android). Google Chrome on Android displays most of them in colour, but fewer than Chrome on Windows. Mozilla Firefox on Android also displays most of them in colour (but fewer than in Chrome) and finally Firefox on Windows correctly displays all black.

Tangentially related: in theory some (/ most (/ even ALL(?))) COLRv* Emoji characters may / should / must (?) have a monochrome variant. I'm not sure whether there is some standard or authority dictating this, but certainly there is a mechanism for that. github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/…

pet peeve: as technological detritus from the era when every corporation was trying to cash in on the popularity of emoji, many unicode characters now are automatically replaced with emoji variants. even in text editors.
