Behold, the Shoggoth cheese ball!
A cheese ball covered in basil stares at you with many, many eyes. Behind it are Innsmouth (cheddar) goldfish and Wailing Writhers (gummy worms).

Brat summer is out, attic wife autumn is in. We’re hissing at people. We’re withdrawing from society. We’re growing our hair below our waist. We’re setting fire to his curtains. We’re gaslighting his new side piece.

Writer friends, here are some excellent thoughts on magicians as skilled craftspeople who might know how a spell works without knowing why it works.
"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux (@BretDevereaux) profile picture"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@BretDevereaux8 Oct 2024
One of the responses this thread got, a few times, ran roughly "if magic is common, magicians become engineers" or variations of that theme - the assumption that magic would be rapidly systematized by fictional pre-modern societies. And I don't think this is right. 1/

One of the substantial errors, in my mind, in fantasy writing, is the idea that 'magic' has to be forced to follow either 1) a parallel system of physics or 2) a logical rules-based system. I'd argue instead that magic systems ought to be *thematically relevant* & *consistent.*

Also, the obsessive fixation on fleshed out magical systems is actually one of the problems with modern fantasy!

My favorite line from a Flights of Foundry session today is from the Sword and Sorcery panel: "be intentional and eat a sandwich."
