my timeline is 10 years before most households have a jack-o-lantern wrangling robot.
I see how some people can watch flashy robot demos on the timeline and think with a shiver that the robot apocalypse is around the corner, but reality check: There is no robot in the world that can change the batteries in a jack-o-lantern. If you have a robot friendly door handle it might be able to walk outside, pick it up, and carry it back inside. The robot could open the drawer with your batteries in it, but then things get tough. Opening the package of AA batteries? Extracting a precision screwdriver from its case? Unscrewing four tiny screws that require a hard press and twist? Popping batteries out of the case? Yes, you could build and train a specialist robot to do that today, but there is a very long way to go to replace the full range of human capabilities. Near term doomer scenarios should stop at β€œsecretly controlling humanity” instead of β€œwiping humanity out” πŸ˜€

this. Japanese people seem to LOVE harsh lights. warm lights are even hard to find in some stores.
Nope. I’ve never seen a nation that loves extremely bright neon white lights as much as Japan. Pics are avg living rooms. Luxury hotels can give off very wrong impressions.

it is really interesting that Miyamoto's pragmatic take on ai in gamedev has seemingly softened many people's stance. i follow many talented pre-ai gamedevs on here that i have seen give very similar opinions only to get shouted down with "pick a side!" mob sentiment.

Miyamoto is not at all the first to ruminate on this kind of a future, but it feels like the pope just stepped into to settle a rift among the faithful.

it's incredible to me how many people took the rage bait.

personally i don't think the trolling helps anybody, despite having to admit it is perfectly executed.

anyway let's not let the whole ai debate distract us from the fact that Miyamoto just made history.

my quick thoughts under this comment by the way!
Replying to @FarFromSubtle
hi frash. for you, is it no art/music/writing gen, or are you wholly anti ai even for code? As a musician I hate ai music, but as a programmer it's getting confusing trying to sus out everyones opinion on code gen and bug finding/fixing with the assistant stuff.

i urge people to read his comments in whole. this is some of the best, thoughtful, pragmatic, non-inflammatory philosophizing i have seen and it comes from somebody with arguably the most clout in the industry.
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the acclaimed designer behind Super Mario and Zelda, has explained why he believes generative AI won’t make human creativity obsolete. "There will always be a role left for us to play." videogameschronicle.com/news…

love this!
LITTLEBIGPLANET IS COMING NATIVELY TO PC 🚨 We just got an early look at a native PC port of the original LittleBigPlanet from the PS3. No emulator, no RPCS3. LBP has always been one of the hardest PS3 games to emulate because it leans so heavily on the Cell processor. Now its PS3 code is being recompiled straight into native PC code. A year ago people said PS3 recomps were years away. The decomp scene is moving insanely fast.

Kenney has done some cool stuff. But asserting that people like Tim Sweeney and John Carmack "don't understand your love for the craft" is fucking absurd.
Tim Sweeney
-> Built Unreal Engine
-> Started Epic Games in his parents' basement
-> One of history's greatest programmers
-> Hires many top-tier artists Kenny
-> "I give out free shit for game jams" Love what you do Kenny, but Tim Sweeney mogs you any day of the week.

people are celebrating as a "worst person you know has made a great point" moment despite the fact that his statements are actually far from rejecting ai.

i remember watching this live and guffawing at the fact that jerry had gall, as a comedian, to tell an audience to "stop laughing, it's not funny". he violated a fundamental principle of comedy. the comedian doesn't decide what is funny. the audience does.
Days after the racist outburst in 2006, Jerry Seinfeld arranged for Michael Richards to appear on Letterman live via satellite to apologize. It didn’t go well. The audience kept laughing at his apology to the point that Seinfeld told them to stop.
