An (un)interesting theory emerged many centuries ago that diseases such as cholera and the bubonic plague were spread by noxious odors called "miasma". Miasma emanated from rotting organic matter, the breath of humans and animals, and other suchlike odors.
This theory severely frustrated and delayed the acceptance of finer scientific findings, such as Germ Theory and water-sanitation innovations, so that when in 1954 cholera was discovered to be waterborne, those latest findings were largely rejected.
