Intercommunal violence in southern Ethiopia has forced nearly 50k people to flee into Kenya. I’ve allocated $3M from UN’s Global Emergency Fund CERF to help partners urgently deliver life-saving food, water, shelter, and health.

In Moyale, I met families fleeing violence in Ethiopia. Grateful to the Kenyan Gov't, Marsabit County authorities & host communities for their support. We hope for peace so families can return home safely and voluntarily. UNHCR and partners remain committed to supporting them.

Dadaab is home to a growing economy, skilled entrepreneurs and untapped economic potential. We were glad to host private sector leaders led by the International Chamber of Commerce Kenya, to explore sustainable investment opportunities for refugees and host communities.

Shukria gave birth five days after arriving in Moyale. Abdi's family is safe in a temporary protection site. A Kenyan family opened their home to Kabale and her children. They fled violence in Ethiopia and crossed into Kenya. They found safety, but the struggle is far from over.

At the close of Kenya’s Social Protection Conference today, I highlighted how the Shirika Plan can advance inclusion for refugees and host communities. Recognised IDs and access to financial services are key to helping refugees benefit from national social protection.

For refugee children, sitting the same national exams as their peers can open doors to more opportunities. Last week, @UNHCR_Kenya signed an MoU with @KNECKenya to help refugee learners take those exams and earn qualifications recognised across Kenya.

How much more suffering can Sudan endure? The killing and devastation must end now. The people of Sudan deserve peace, safety, dignity, and a future free from violence. The world must not look away.
The war in Sudan is devastating lives. People are fleeing horrific violence. Families are being torn apart. UNHCR's @mamadou_dbalde met refugees arriving in Chad carrying the trauma of what they have endured in search of safety. Refugees must be protected.

Important conversations are taking place in Dadaab this week as partners review progress under GISEDP and look ahead. This work is an important part of advancing longer-term, sustainable inclusion for refugee and host communities, in line with the vision of the Shirika Plan.

The Shirika Plan is a landmark opportunity to turn refugee inclusion into practical results. In Kakuma and Kalobeyei, 14 UN agencies came together with Government and Turkana County to look at how we can better align our support behind this shared vision. unhcr.org/ke/news/press-rele…

Across Kenya, colleagues, partners and community workers protect and support refugees and host communities every day. On #WorldHumanitarianDay, I honour their service and remember more than 80 aid workers killed worldwide this year. Humanitarians must never be targets.

Kenya’s long history of protecting refugees reflects the enduring principles of the 1951 Refugee Convention. As we mark 75 years, we recognise Kenya’s continued commitment to advancing protection, inclusion and opportunities for refugees and host communities.
Today marks 75 years since the adoption of the Refugee Convention, which has protected the rights of people forced to flee. In Kenya, it continues to guide protection & inclusion for refugees alongside host communities. Everyone deserves safety, dignity and a chance to rebuild.
