At today’s Civil Society Forum on Women, Peace and Security, Femena’s Zubaida Akbar called on the #UN and the international community to end the exclusion of Afghan women and turn commitments into action. 🧵@ngowgwps #WPS #Afghanistan
“If the WPS agenda means that women’s participation and protection are non-negotiable, why has the international community, including the UN, repeatedly allowed the Taliban to make those very rights negotiable?”
— Zubaida Akbar

“We need to be clear: engagement must not become normalization.”
— Zubaida Akbar on international engagement with the Taliban.

“Back home, we show up on the front lines of protests and civic resistance despite abductions, imprisonment, torture, killings, and rape by the Taliban.”
— Zubaida Akbar

“And yet, the women of Afghanistan continue to show up.”
“In exile, we show up despite the risks of speaking up publicly, resource restrictions, and visa and travel obstacles.”
— Zubaida Akbar

“When the WPS agenda continues to fail: It looks like women human rights defenders and protesters being punished for doing precisely what the Women, Peace and Security agenda says women should be empowered to do.”
— Zubaida Akbar

“When the WPS agenda fails, it looks like Afghanistan in August 2021.”
— Zubaida Akbar at the 2026 Civil Society Forum on Women, Peace and Security.

“When the WPS agenda continues to fail, it looks like Afghanistan today … It looks like a society where half the population has been erased.”
