We've achieved a lot in the 4 years since our formal launch. Here are some highlights, with heartfelt thanks to all of you who made it possible.
2023
Mothers from around the world wrote to #Hague Sec-Gen with their stories. Extracts were included in our Mothers Voices booklet.

🚨A renewed push for mandatory shared care is being sold as fair and child-centred.
Its neither.
It is a pushback against moves to prioritise safety over contact. Most private law cases involve domestic abuse. Forcing equal time in those cases doesn't protect children, it creates ongoing proximity to an abuser.
Children are not units to be divided equally. They need to be safe.
📰Why Mandatory Shared Care is a Terrible Idea:

Fantastic women
2023
Alongside global partners we set up the #ProtectHagueVictims petition which garnered c38,000 signatures.
Roz (GlobalARRK) & Ruth (FHM) took it to Hague Sec-Gen Bernasconi. This led to a promise to organise a forum on DV & the Hague. The first of its kind.

More 2023 highlights...
We gained the support of #UNSRVAW Reem Alsalem who, with colleagues, sent an Open Letter to #HagueBureau calling for change.
Heartfelt thanks to Reem for all she has done, and continues to do, to support #HagueMothers worldwide.

We also sent an Open Letter to #HagueBureau, signed by 90+ international experts & organisations. We asked for a simple recognition that improvement is needed in the implementation of the #HagueConvention for survivors of domestic abuse who flee for safety with their children.

I’ve had the privilege of volunteering with this amazing band of sisters and I’m so inspired by their tenacity and strategy.

2022: 3 women at a kitchen table discussing how to end the abuses of #HagueConvention.
Via FiLiA's global network of activists, academics, lawyers, DA experts & survivors, we began to build a movement.
In October we launched at the FiLiA Conference, Cardiff.

Legal abuse is real. Abusers often weaponise the family court system to maintain control and punish survivors post-separation.

A powerful reminder of why lived experience must have a seat at the table when shaping justice reform.
These changes didn't happen by chance. They happened because families challenged the system, demanded better and refused to give up. This is what meaningful engagement can achieve.
Families fought. The rules are changing.
New powers will hold offenders accountable for refusing to attend sentencing, following years of campaigning by victims' families. A powerful reminder of what lived experience and collective action can achieve.

Once an abusive father takes the case to family court, the threat becomes constant. Any attempt to protect the children, set a boundary, or speak the truth can be turned against the mother. He wants to restrict her, control her, or remove the children.
This is the omnipresent threat at the heart of weaponised proceedings.
In my book I set out exactly how this operates and why so many mothers remain trapped in fear long after they leave.

But today isn't just about celebrating 4 years of FHM.
We also celebrate every Hague mother who has spoken out, shared her story, helped another mum; every volunteer, every supporter who has given their time, knowledge, kindness and energy.
Together we will win this fight.

Narkis Golan is both extraordinary & ordinary. A loving mother who would never stop fighting to keep her child safe, who set a new precedent in the US Supreme Court, & inspired the Narkis Golan Initiative in NY.
Her courage & determination continues to inspire us...

The launch was inspirational. A panel event: Sudha Shetty (USA), Gina Masterton (Aus), Kim Fawcett (UK); 23 Hague mothers from across the world. And a tribute to Hague mother Narkis Golan from her friend Sarah-Marie sharing Narkis's letter with Hague mothers everywhere...
