#facts from our Head Coach. Bates just got a winning lottery ticket with this roster slot. I'm calling it now, he's leaving with 1) a great education, and 2) a school football record of some kind. Congratulations to both @amari_mills and @Bates_Football on this commitment. Can't wait to see @amari_mills continue to crush it next year in college!
I am so happy for you and your family!@Bates_Football hit the jackpot! Congratulations big guy! Looking forward to following your career up in Lewiston!

I appreciated the DM’s after my roster/scholarship post last week. A couple people asked me how they can tell where they are in the recruiting process. Short answer - it is mostly based on where you are in your high school career. Here’s the allowable process and timelines for recruiting milestones under the current lo NCAA rules: - June 15 (Summer before Junior Season): D1 direct communication opens (calls, texts, DMs). Programs distribute large volumes of early verbal offers; nearly all are non-committable placeholders used to gauge interest. - January 1 (after Junior Season): Permissible off-campus in-person contact opens during designated contact periods. This is when you see coaches visit high school programs. You will see a lot of “thank you coach for coming out.” - April 1 – Late June (Junior Year): Spring/Summer Official Visits (OVs) begin. An extended OV invitation generally signals a path to an active, committable offer, frequently paired with short-fuse decision deadlines. - June (Summer before Senior season): invites to on-campus camp circuits. Teams usually require in-person camp attendance to test verified athletic metrics before converting non-committable offers into green-light commitments. - September 1 (Senior Year): Fall game-day evaluations and senior-season OVs open. Live senior film determines whether you are borderline or back-up. As people signal commitments to programs, spots for backups often convert to committable. >>>MOST IMPORTANT DATE IN THE PROCESS! <<< - November 15 (Senior Year): This is the permissible date for NCAA D1 programs to issue formal written offers of athletic aid (Bylaw 13.9.3). Any verbal "offer" not accompanied by written paperwork on or after this date is still 100% non-committable. - Early December (Senior Year): Early Signing Period opens (Wednesday before the first Saturday in December). Unclaimed non-committable offers fade away completely as 105-man roster caps are finalized ahead of the transfer portal window. - Early February (Senior Year): Regular National Signing Day. This is the final mop-up period for remaining roster slots that were not filled during the December window or portal cycle. This is the last shot to be offered a spot on a roster before hanging up cleats (or attending a target and trying to “walk-on”).

Visits can be just as important to learn what doesn’t work. Even if the football could be compatible, I still have to spend time on the campus, in the classrooms, and with the students and faculty. I’m learning that sometimes those other things may not always be a good fit and that crossing schools off is just as important as adding them….next rep.

I’m definitely an O-Line guy at my core, but defense is fun when you get to make plays like this. Two pulling guards, a wing/slot crashing inside, I know what that means…

A lot of guys are navigating offers and how things work with CFB scholarships. I wanted to share what I learned during my junior year journey so far as I am learning all of this myself. There was a lawsuit that resulted in the “House settlement” that changed things last year. Hope it helps. FBS SCHOOLS - Rosters are generally limited to 105 players at “House-participating” schools, with certain exceptions. - The previous 85 full-scholarship limit was eliminated in 2025. Full and partial athletic scholarships are also now permitted. - Recruiting impact was that major programs now have more room for scholarship funding, but roster caps can reduce the likelihood of offering traditional walk-on and developmental opportunities. FCS SCHOOLS - The 105-player limit applies to House participating schools, but not all FCS programs. - Full and partial athletic scholarships are permitted. Nonparticipating scholarship programs generally follow the traditional 63-scholarship-equivalency limit. - Scholarship funding varies significantly. Many programs cannot fully fund all of their available scholarships, making partial scholarships and combined aid packages common. IVY LEAGUE (FCS) - Not automatically subject to the 105-player limit because the conference did not initially participate in the House settlement. - No athletic or academic merit scholarships in the Ivy League. Financial aid is based entirely on demonstrated financial need. - Generous need-based aid can cover the full cost of attendance for qualifying families. Coaches build packets to support admissions requests for athletes, but do not determine final admissions decisions or financial aid. SERVICE ACADEMIES (ARMY, NAVY & AIR FORCE) - The academies initially opted out of the House settlement, so the 105-player limit does not automatically apply. - They are 100% government-funded education, including tuition, room, board, and benefits, which replaces traditional athletic scholarships. Military service obligations generally apply after graduation. - Larger recruiting classes and developmental rosters were not automatically eliminated. Recruits must meet academy admissions, medical, physical, and military requirements. MY BIGGEST TAKEWAY FROM THIS There is a difference between a) being offered a roster spot, b) getting athletic scholarship money, and c) getting a fully funded education. Understanding the school’s roster limitations, available funding, league rules, and their recruiting priorities is critical when you are searching for a football home after HS.

Huge thank you to @Merrimack_FB and the coaching staff for the game day invite this weekend! Unfortunately, I’m honoring a prior visit commitment I made, so I won’t be able to make it out to North Andover for this one. Wishing the Warriors the best of luck against @UNH_Football, and I hope to get on campus for a visit! I would love to find a date to get there soon -- my mom is an Alumna!

Thank you to @coach_cahill and Coach @zachdeldin for spending so much time with me yesterday. I hope I was able to leave your program with some measurable data points and also a better idea of who I am as a student athlete and a person. It was great spending time with you, @CoachOstrowsky, Coach @AlexKurtzYale and the other staff and players at @yalefootball. Thank you for the kind welcome, detailed orientation and for showing me around the facilities and the Yale Bowl. It was great to see Team 153 walk out and represent the program where football grew and evolved many times through its infancy. I’m committed to doing the work to keep open the academic doors needed so we can continue exploring the athletic conversations. I understand the mission. I’m looking forward to coming back to campus to meet Coach @Bigstef72 at a spring practice (I’ll have that Dec SAT score in hand and also a plan for senior year classes locked in to go over!). Coach Cahill asked “How could you say no to Yale?” I don’t know, Coach. I don’t know… Wow!
