Fledgling Theories Podcast

How does your love of coffee affect the birds you love to watch? This month's study looks at how shade coffee plantation stacks up against native forest as habitat for a weary long-distance migrant warbler. Tune in here: bit.ly/3hCeTFM #birds #scicomm #Coffee

2/5 #BOUsci24 #SESH5 The islands in the far north end of the chain are sparsely inhabited and visited compared to the southern islands. See human population numbers on the map below. We've used them as refugia. But they're also VERY expensive and challenging to access.

3/5 #BOUsci24 #SESH5 We've moved five species to three islands so far. But how are those populations doing? We're trying to find out using automated recording units. Here's a peek at results for Micronesian Rufous Fantail: darker is more detections per minute, lighter is fewer.

5/5 #BOUsci24 #SESH5 We're hopeful that with increased monitoring effort using ARUs, we can grapple with some solutions to our challenges. But transportation logistics to these islands, cooperation with residents, and expedition safety remain ongoing challenges to manage.

1/5 #BOUsci24 #SESH5 The Brown Tree Snake has caused the extinction or extirpation of most of the forest birds on Guam. As Guam's closest neighbors, the Northern Mariana Islands have been working hard to prevent this fate in the rest of the archipelago, using translocation.

4/5 #BOUsci24 #SESH5 Another challenge we're grappling with is species area relationship. After translocating new species, some of these islands may now have more species of forest birds than they can hold. But we don't know what the timeline for reversion to the mean will be.

Neat visualization of where this goose's movements around Dublin!

Long, cold, wet weather spells make it tough for Cliff Swallows to survive. But these occasional high mortality events can give us a window into how extreme weather drives evolution. New episode up now! bit.ly/2xzWWoA #scicomm #ornithology #podcast

@J_Reneerkens We're chatting all about your "Low fitness at low latitudes" paper on our podcast this month! (Spoiler alert: we loved it!)

We're back! Join us for a chat about the costs and benefits of long distance migration, the importance of falsifying hypotheses, and how what happens on the wintering grounds can make or break the breeding season. bit.ly/39bggGq #ornithology #podcast #scicomm #migration

Hello friends, Just a quick note to say we'll be back on 6 February with a brand new episode for you. Hope your new year has been filled with delight so far!

'Tis the season for caroling... and some of us enunciate better than others. Are Thrush Nightingales singing a funny, inconsistent version of their song while on their wintering grounds to rehearse for spring? #ornithology #birds #podcast #ChristmasCarols bit.ly/355lr92

When hundreds of cranes hit the same stretch of power line each year, it's time for solutions. Tune for a chat about migratory flight risks, how fundamental research can inform innovation, and ethical dilemmas. bit.ly/2PSpFfH #ornithology #scicomm #conservation #cranes

What is there to say? What you see is what you get. You can almost see the owl filling out his "request a new roommate" form in his head.
