My latest, with @propublica + @NYTmag: An Oklahoma law was supposed to help reduce the sentences of domestic violence survivors who fought back -- women who are serving long sentences for killing their abusers. Why are nearly all of them still in prison?

Oklahoma has one of the worst rates of domestic violence. It's easy to ask why someone didn't just leave or call police, but the reality is much more dangerous. This week I break it down with Tracey Lyall, CEO of Tulsa's Domestic Violence Intervention Services. #indepthwithdeon

DVIS CEO Tracey Lyall explains the importance of survivors of domestic abuse having a safety plan as they're exiting the relationship.
"It's really just thinking through all the different ways that you need to consider safety for you and your family."

A new Oklahoma law for imprisoned survivors who defended themselves against their abusers faced a setback this week after April Wilkens was denied resentencing. In a state where we pride ourselves on self-defense, why is it so difficult for women to access that same protection?

This is huge. Oklahoma — a state with some of the highest domestic violence in the country — just signed a bill into law to reduce sentences for women who defend themselves against an abuser. Only CA, IL, and NY have similar legislation.

NEW: Oklahoma just passed a new law: It gives a new chance at release to domestic violence survivors who were incarcerated for their response to the abuse.
Here's why it's a big deal, from @LVikkiml who talked to people who are waiting for help: boltsmag.org/oklahoma-surviv…

Treat said there were two substantive changes included in SB1835, the first being shifting “substantially related” as the standard for evidence to “clear and convincing.”

With a vote of 86-4, The Oklahoma Survivors Act passed the House today. I’m proud to have co-authored this important piece of legislation. Oklahoma is #1 in domestic violence in the country and this bill is a huge win for those who have been victimized in our state. 1/

Governor Stitt just signed SB1835 into law! Thank you @GovStitt and congrats to all of the groups that put so much effort into this.
I am thrilled that the House and Senate sent this bill to the Governor yesterday. Once it is signed into law, Oklahoma will have a legal mechanism to ensure justice and compassion for abuse victims while also upholding the rule of law. @rightoncrime

After a veto, the OK Survivors’ Justice Act, SB 1835, was signed into law.
This allows for the resentencing of survivors who fought back against their abuse and for judges to take into consideration evidence of abuse.
Congrats to @OK_Appleseed, @alexfor2f08, @PandaLibrarian7.

.@KTULNews has learned the Oklahoma Survivors' Act has been signed into law by @GovStitt, allowing domestic violence survivors leniency in sentencing if abuse was a factor in their crime. Here's the story of a woman who may qualify for sentencing relief.
