Once again, I learned my lesson in mixing music. The answer was, as always, more compression. The bass wasn't sitting in a way I wanted, and EQ was just overemphasizing a certain range of notes. 1176 the fuck out of it was the answer.

I notice that there's so many videos on "How to EQ *blank*", or "The best Vocal Chain" type videos. I don't think that I've seen a single video on automation for music. Maybe it's just overlooked?
Post audio has so much annoying and fine automation at times. It's possible that eq changes from line to line at times. Volume automation plays a part in both dynamics control, and storytelling. I know it's needed in music, so you'd think I'd see more on it.

It's getting kinda chilly outside so I thought I'd noodle around with some winter theme BGM

VTubers and streamers!
I'm an audio engineer with a decade of experience helping content creators improve their sound. I have openings on VGen for custom OBS audio filter settings. I don't use generic "how to get a pro sound" presets. I treat this like post-production work and tailor the settings to your room, desk, noise, setup, and voice. Clarity and consistency are what I aim for.
Disclaimer!
Audio is full of compromise. Laughing, getting excited, or getting louder can sound choppy or cut off from incorrect filter order and/or noise suppression. My method may leave a little noise, but that is a better trade-off than clipping or getting cut off. I consider a small amount of leftover noise to be worth it for consistent audio.
All sessions take place in a Discord call

There are tools I never get to use in post audio that music uses often. It's been a bit of a challenge to learn what's useful in certain situations. Limiters in post are a safety net and nothing more. Set them to the delivery spec of like -2db and never touch it.
Seeing a lot of fancy gates, clippers, saturators etc... It's a lot to sort through.
I'm trying to record lines for what must be the first time in like 5 months. I'm instantly reminded of why I hated doing it.
*2 lines*
Car going by

A plane going overhead for some fucking reason

Neighbor starts mowing their lawn.
I never got onto the fresh air train. I use waves vitamin for that high air slightly saturated sound.
I was practicing mixing metal again and had a moment of learning. Post production teaches you to fear compression, so I approach it with a light touch. I'm learning to just not care as much with music.
My vocals just weren't sitting right, and I was struggling to figure out why. I'd try EQ, faders, adjusting thresholds etc. The answer was turning the ratio on my distressor from 3:1 to 6:1. It just fit after that simple change.
Someone bought me a Ko-fi, but my old account was linked to it. I'd like to thank the individual for their kindness. It means a lot that someone would show me such care.

We're live!
Vtubers! I wanted to share some advice on setting reverb for live karaoke when using Reaper into OBS. (Most any daw can do this btw.")
I was playing around with making a fully free live vocal chain and wanted to make a little video on something. It's not the best editing, so please ignore that. The dialogue also sounds a bit crunchy since the chain is more for a dense mix, and not spoken-word stuff.
I've seen posts about pitch correction making a singer feel less competent. You can tell who has and hasn't dabbled in audio engineering. In a production, pitch correction is just another tool.
It certainly can be used as a crutch, but I don't see it being used that way all the time. Pop music, among other genres, relies on an extremely tight sound. Musical elements are quantized to be right on point and "perfect." Your vocals need to match the production when other elements are that tight. Pitch correction tightens up the sound of your voice and locks it in to match what's around it. Vocals can really sound off when they're looser than the arrangement.
Pop music is made to be easily digestible to a wide audience, and this tight sound helps achieve that. The brain has less work to do when things aren't as dynamic and musical elements are right on beat. It can remove the need to actually focus on what you're listening to.
