Today is the 229th anniversary of the launch of USS Constitution, the ship America calls Old Ironsides.
On October 21, 1797, she slid into Boston Harbor as one of the first six ships of the United States Navy. In the War of 1812, British cannonballs bounced off her thick oak hull and sailors swore her sides were made of iron. The name stuck. She is still a commissioned U.S. Navy ship today, crewed by active-duty sailors, and the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
Today is the 245th anniversary of the surrender at Yorktown, the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War.
On October 19, 1781, the British army surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. French soldiers and warships fought alongside the Americans and trapped the British with no way out. The war dragged on for two more years, but after this day, Britain knew it had lost. America would be free.
A statue of Christopher Columbus stands on the White House grounds, outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
The original stood in Baltimore until July 4, 2020, when it was torn down and thrown into the Inner Harbor. It was rebuilt in marble and raised again here in America’s 250th year.
