One Electric Family Sedan versus a Field of Hypercars: Unplugged Performanceās Tesla Model S-APEX Plaid Wins Petersen Time Attack at Willow Springs Reimagined Event
newspressusa.com/releases/puā¦
I just read this Supercars article about our recent win at Willow Springs, Reimagined. Link in comments
I know surfaces like Pikes Peak and Mt. Washington are extremely challenging, which is why fan cars have historically avoided them. Iād love to see the Roadster change that narrative.
Another edge case is turns 8 and 9 at WSIR (Big Willow), where the surface is old, heavily cracked, and very bumpy. In Dark Helmet (with heavily modified aero package), I enter turn 8 at 165 mph and can still carry decent speed through turn 9.
Iām very excited to find out if Roadsterās fan, skirt, and aero elements can confidently navigate these extreme surfaces.
Check this gallery of my new look from Unplugged! Also now available on their website is this exact wheel/tire package! 22ā CYBRHEX with Toyo Open Country A/T III EV. Ask me for the link in comments and Iāll reply š¤
Tesla has clearly engineered an exceptional baseline aero package for the Roadster. The fan and deployable skirts, combined with the suite of active aerodynamic elements, already delivers a level of low-speed and high-speed grip that goes well beyond conventional road cars. For street use and the adventurous track days, that package is more than sufficient. Some could say extremely excessive.
My interest comes from a racing background, and my job is always to extract every bit of performance with a creative perspective. The goal is to think beyond what currently exists.
With that mindset, I started exploring whether a complementary secondary aero package could expand the carās capabilities even further. Especially for hill climbs or on circuit tracks. My thoughts are more theoretical since I havenāt driven the Roadster and I havenāt reviewed any CFD data. The upgraded concepts I suggest are based on experience with other race vehicles and research of the latest Roadster spec.
From whatās been shown, Tesla appears to have active aero elements in the front (movable wings), an active vent on the hood, pop out bargeboards, and a well thought out active rear wing. Thereās always room to refine or expand these systems, particularly while development continues.
One idea that stands out to me is a set of active canards positioned at the front top corners and potentially another set near the rear fenders. They could be built into the panels and invisible when not active. These could work independently or in coordination with the OEM components to add targeted downforce during braking and cornering. They might also help on imperfect surfaces where the suction system and skirts canāt fully seal, and they could potentially contribute during the brief flight phases enabled by the thrusters. Again, I do understand the OEM active wings in the front and rear can help but Iām thinking at an extreme level of performance where exterior canards are proven to be beneficial.
My goal wouldnāt be to replace what Tesla has already done, but to complement it for maximum grip under specific conditions.
Ultimately, even the most advanced vehicles benefit from thoughtful aftermarket development. Performance is never a finished state, itās an ongoing process of refinement.

Itās crazy this vehicle was in storage for over a year. We kept the used slicks on it and ran it the way it was. You canāt do that with many race cars

@FromWhereICHG Dark Helmet. 00:52.125. Unlimited Class WIN. š
Watch the winning run from Turn 1 to Turn 5 at Big Willow during the inaugural Petersen Time Attack!
Huge thanks to Willow Springs, Petersen Automotive Museum, and Tesla for making this possible.
It was a pleasure to get back in this machine and pull off another win.
Shout out to UP and the pit crew for trusting in me.

Unplugged Performance wins the inaugural Petersen Time Attack at Willow Springs Reimagined 2026!
From Turn 1 to Turn 5 on Big Willow, against a field of legendary supercars.
Huge thanks to Tesla, the Petersen Museum, Willow Springs International Raceway, and everyone who made this possible.
I honestly didnāt think I would ever need to add this line item to my race track prep list:
Request FAA flight authorization
Iāve arrived with @UnpluggedTesla at WSIR for the Reimagined event. We entered to run in the Hill Climb race. Iām really excited. Maybe Iāll sleep in my race suit tonight š
A homeless man came into McDonaldās and walks around asking for money. I offer to buy him a meal instead, but he refuses it. Itās hard to believe itās always because they want the money for drugs. What could be the other reasons they decline a meal?
