They are shy, awkward people who can barely form a coherent sentence around each other. When they're apart, their relationship grows through letters. They become a symbol of home to each other when the idea of home seems lost.
Decided to throw on one of my comfort films last night and watch COLD MOUNTAIN, and I was struck this time by how the space between two lonely people takes center stage against the epic backdrop, as people cling to a small kernel of hope even as the world collapses around them.

"Too busy analysing to enjoy" is so funny because if I'm analysing a film that is a sign that it is drawing in my attention and working on me

Ellie Lucas, writing for From the Front Row, described The Odyssey as the story of a broken man trying to lead his men home from a pointless war, and wrote about vanity, atonement, family and the chance for a new generation to succeed where the previous one failed. @FrontRowEllie

when you actually list it out it becomes really clear that most of the time Ebert was "wrong" about a great movie it's because he was really sensitive about the depiction of rape, which I can't really get huffy over.
Roger Ebert's zero stars review of The Devils
rogerebert.com/reviews/the-d…
Roger also gave zero stars to:
Texas Chainsaw
I Spit On Your Grave
The Hitcher
Police Academy
Death Wish 2
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
he gave 1 star to Blue Velvet & The Thing & half a star to Hellraiser
One thing that I think hampers a lot of film writing (especially social media takes), is that people often seem too concerned with how other people perceive their taste.
This probably isn't helped by the fact that fandoms will swarm and dissenting opinions, and even swarm positive reactions of films fro people they're having imaginary beef with.
The restoration of THE DEVILS is a revelation. Felt like witnessing a resurrection, as fiery and vital as ever. The fury of Russell's images feels somehow sacred and profane, its portrait of religious corruption and state decadence undimmed by time.

One more thing on Clayface: I have worked at Deadline, THR, the Associated Press, and People Magazine to name several….not a single one of them views embargoes the way the people bashing this critic/defending WB do. An embargo requires you to agree. Explicitly.
The existence of Holiday Creamy Vanilla Coke proves that Coke could make regular Vanilla Coke taste this delicious all year round, but simply choose not to.
DC fans accusing people of being Marvel shills. Marvel fans accusing people of being DC shills. Calm down...you're all dorks.
