Yep, in my 3 years of working the counter and about 1.5 years of doing purchasing that's kinda how it be. It's a risk shift proposition. I.e, I take on all the risk of it not selling, and sitting on my rack for the next 3+ years.

Consignment is better if your time preference is high (I don't take the risk on it not selling, just the risk of the rack space), private is the best. If a gun I know won't sell for months comes in, I will always pay less. One shop I worked for did 40% of book value (from 1993)
