The average Mexican in 1990 had the private goods and public services that the average Indian has today. Unsurprisingly, India lags Mexico on several metrics like infant mortality rate by 23-26 years.
I love India but this is simply not true. Mexico is an upper middle income country with $14,000 GDP per capita while India is $3,000. This is reflected in the material conditions and availability of public services and infrastructure. I went to one of the poorest parts of Mexico (Oaxaca) in 2012. This is their equivalent of Bihar. The streets were clean and municipal services and enforcement (against things like encroachment) was robust. That being said, violent crime in India is several orders of magnitude lower than Mexico. Most foreigner tourists could walk through an Indian favela equivalent with no credible threat to their safety.

Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

Brasil es ese país donde pueblitos de 60 mil habitantes parecen metrópolis de cientos de miles de personas. Mientras que México es el país donde ciudades de millones de habitantes parecen pueblitos de 60 mil.

It's just a shame that Limodio miscoded the treatment period to include the month before Ramadhan rather than the month after. The result disappears when the period described in the text is used. The curse of the slop five strikes again.

Something I learned today: Korea nominal GDP growth in 2026 will be about 20% CPI inflation is 3% GDP deflator is 17%. It’s all in the price of semiconductors

Seems like one implication is that per capita income is a lot better than thought?

Most people are probably dismissive of it when they encounter it, but the success of Chinese “old town” tourism spots is a massively fascinating phenomenon because it’s the antithesis of what European tourism is trying to be, which is overcharging you on an “authentic secret”.

Similar story for “arroz a la cubana” (Cuban rice) in Spain, if you ask for one in Cuba, either they won’t know about it, or they just know because a Spanish tourist asked for it before.

argh I read that paper and I was interested what they had to say about sweden (fully prot country, huge witch trials with at least 300 executed) but it turns out they chose a source that only covered the part of the country that didn't execute anybody
