ALT GIA Statement on Ald Ray Lopez’s Attempts to Divide Communities for Political Gain “To address the problems facing our city, we need elected officials to come together to move policies that benefit all Chicagoans. Unfortunately, Chicago has a long history of politicians who divide our communities against each other to serve their own personal benefit. In recent years, this divide-and-conquer approach has been exemplified by Ald Ray Lopez. Lopez has consistently used xenophobia, racism, and right-wing talking points to attempt to advance his political career. Last week, we witnessed Ald Lopez using lies to fuel divisions and derail a popular progressive agenda that most Chicagoans support. We call on the rest of Chicago’s elected officials to reject Ald Lopez’s attempts at division and instead come together to defend and move forward critical policies such as Bring Chicago Home, Treatment Not Trauma, the Welcoming City Ordinance that will improve the lives of all Chicagoans.”
