1. The bottom line: SARS-CoV-2 only emerged in late 2019. No-one can know the long-term effects of repeated infections, but with anosmia and cognitive dysfunction as common symptoms, the assumption I make is that there is a tsunami of early-onset neurocognitive diseases coming.

A study of nearly 500,000 adults found Paxlovid taken within 5 days of COVID-19 infection was linked to a 12% lower risk of Long COVID in high-risk adults. That's around 3 fewer Long COVID cases per 100 people treated. For lower-risk adults, researchers found no clear benefit.

Today, FDA kicked off its Rare Disease Framework Initiative with a public meeting, co-hosted by @ReaganUdall. Thanks to all who joined for your input, candor & vision. With only 5% of rare diseases having an approved treatment, the status quo isn't enough — we must do more. FDA Acting Commissioner @FDA_KyleD shared with the attendees that the “urgency of the need has not changed, but now we — the agency, drug developers, researchers, and patients — are ready to meet that need together.”

Adding this to the “SARS-CoV-2 persists in almost every organ & organ system indefinitely” mega thread.
SARS.RF.5 gut persistence: SARS variants are getting better at persistent infection. Only now do we know BA.2.86 and JN.1 infected small-intestine models more efficiently than Omikron. #LongCOVID is #AirborneAIDS so #WearN95
