Wes Anderson brought his signature love of practical effects to Asteroid City, avoiding CGI whenever possible. So when the film called for a roadrunner, the production used a fully physical puppet operated by a puppeteer with experience on Star Wars productions.
The puppeteer wore a green-screen suit so they could be digitally removed afterward, while the roadrunner itself remained physically present on set. It required careful coordination between the puppeteer, camera crew, and visual effects team, but the result gave the bird the natural movement and handcrafted feel Anderson wanted.
