Glorious fun last night amid the indie podcasting great and good. We walked on to the stage to the tune of our beloved @GarlicAndPearls jingle - surreal moment - and we are basking in the @IndPodAwards judges’ appreciation: ‘captures the spirit of the show… a great example of storytelling… makes us want to listen to the podcast - right now!’
But oh, how we missed @SuzanneRaine2!

Utterly delighted for @GarlicAndPearls and thrilled for Matthew who is to me and @SuzanneRaine2 so much more than a producer!

The dark is rising, and @SuzanneRaine2 is on hand to make the back of your neck prickle with the creepy, poetic and quintessentially British ghost stories of MR James. What would you do, faced with an intriguing and sinister object? Sweet dreams and Happy Halloween!
In this week’s episode @murielzagha and @SuzanneRaine2 convene libertines and rakes, meditative women and Orientalist collectors as they explore the FRENCH BOUDOIR! What is it and what’s it for? Bejewelled retreat? Haven of frolics? Find out! 👇

Spoke to @nickwallis and @rosiewright99 on @TimesRadio earlier about today’s protests in France, which are expected to be considerable as they bring together students, unions, farmers, gilets jaunes and, inevitably, casseurs (violent vandals). France is a conservative country periodically shaken by eruptions of protests and taking to the streets.
I wrote about this in more detail for @EngelsbergIdeas:

Odd’s truth! This week on @GarlicAndPearls @SuzanneRaine2 tells me everything about the very first and quintessentially British masked superhero - the dashing SCARLET PIMPERNEL! Find out about Hungarian émigrée Baroness Orczy's colourful 1905 historical novel set during the French Revolution, in which a gallant mild-mannered fop and his associates stick it to Madame Guillotine by rescuing French aristocrats on the run from bloodthirsty sans culottes and the dastardly Citoyen Chauvelin! And before this highly romantic rendering of the French Revolution seen from the British side of the Channel, was there in fact a real-life Scarlet Pimpernel? And what happened to French emigrés in Britain? Isambard Kingdom Brunel guest stars.
