With @LoganPaul chasing the PSA 10 CoroCoro master set, and running into the Pop 0 Ivy Pikachu, I wanted to highlight the 2000 Pokemon Topps Chrome population report and the true scarcity that most collectors don’t even know about. For years, Topps Chrome was overlooked by much of the hobby in favor of the TCG, and still is today. Because of that, relatively few cards were preserved in gem condition, in addition to minuscule print runs (relative to WOTC). Most people hardly know this set even exists. Finding any sealed product is near impossible. As I write this, I only know of one booster box actually for sale today. Today, that story is reflected in the PSA population report. Many Tekno and Sparkle cards have PSA 10 populations in the single digits, several have fewer than five copies, and at least one card, the Tekno Gloom—remains Pop 0 in PSA 10. That’s what makes this set so fascinating. Not only are the pops ridiculously low, most under 50 total pop. There’s literally 0 PSA 10 copies of tekno Gloom, preventing a PSA 10 master set. At a certain point, completing the set is no longer about having enough money, it’s about whether the cards even exist in Gem grades. No collector, regardless of budget, can complete a true PSA 10 master set until a Tekno Gloom PSA 10 is graded. No money can buy a completed set today as it stands. And finding enough gradeable supply is another hurdle in itself. Even if you had a shit ton of money, this set in a PSA 10 would likely prove to be the most expensive Pokemon set of all time.
