This DM came to me from a top NCAA D1 soccer ⚽️ Coach buddy of mine:
“Received yet another email from a dad telling me that it's his daughter's dream to play NCAA D1”
“Some dream if you can't write your own email”
“My biggest no-no, when parents take the lead vs the player”
Good advice as a lot of coaches feel this way.
There’s a difference between helping your kids and doing it for them.
If your player needs help?
Just ask

D1 Athlete vs. D2 Athlete
D1 ATHLETE
⚡ Typically faster and more explosive
🏃 Better ability to cover ground
💪 Usually stronger and more physically developed
🔄 Can perform at a high level repeatedly, not just in flashes
🧠 Faster decision making under pressure
⚔️ Handles higher training and game intensity
📈 More competition for every roster spot
🔥 Athletic weaknesses are exposed quickly
D2 ATHLETE
⚡ Can still be an excellent athlete, but the average athletic ceiling is generally a little lower
🏃 Speed and explosiveness vary more from program to program
💪 Physical development can be more variable
🧠 Strong soccer IQ and technical ability can compensate for athletic differences
📈 Greater variation in player profiles across programs
🔥 Top D2 players can absolutely be D1-caliber athletes

While I was in Florida, I’m on the beach, and it’s like 90+ degrees with 95% humidity. I’m in shorts and my bikini.
I see a Muslim family, not too far from where I was sunbathing.
The kids, especially the boys had been wearing swim shorts and the young girl had one-piece swimsuit on.
The what I assume was the oldest daughter and the mother were completely covered up, with their long-sleeved shirts up to their freaking knuckles!
No cap.
The father had no shirt on with swim shorts as well. But…Those two women had to be dying under all of that crap.
Their eyes, tips of their fingers and their feet were the only things that were exposed. It was horrific.
I just stared and shook my head, because this OPPRESSIVE, radical Islam crap doesn’t belong ANYWHERE here in our America.

COLLEGE SOCCER TRUTH
Players, who don’t pass their fitness test don’t just lose the test… they lose opportunities.
Every coach notices who came back prepared and who didn’t.
Failing the fitness test can mean:
⚽ Starting preseason behind everyone else.
⚽ Less playing time early in the season.
⚽ Less trust from the coaching staff.
⚽ Spending valuable training time trying to catch up instead of improving.
Fitness is one of the few things you can control before preseason starts.
Don’t show up hoping you’re in shape. Show up knowing you are.

Unpopular opinion:
90% of college soccer recruiting failures have nothing to do with talent.
Players spend thousands on showcases, camps, and highlight videos…
But never send personalized emails.
Never follow up.
Never build relationships with coaches.
Never research roster needs.
The player who is “good enough” and communicates well will often get recruited before the player who is slightly better and does nothing.
College coaches aren’t just recruiting athletes.
They’re recruiting future teammates, students, and people they want in their program for 4 to 5 years.
What’s the biggest recruiting mistake you see players making?

Parents:
This may be unpopular & hard to hear but…
If your kid won’t carve out even 30 minutes a day, outside of team practices, to work on their skills, they’re chasing the highlight reel version of success, not the real work behind it
They’re interested, but NOT committed
And honestly? That’s perfectly fine!
Not every child is built for that level of daily dedication in one sport
As a parent, our job isn’t to force it, it’s to help them find the activity, sport, or passion where that extra effort feels worth it to THEM
The right thing lights the fire; the wrong one just burns them out

Reality of college recruiting:
D1: ~2%
D2: ~2%
NAIA: ~3%
D3: ~3%
Juco: ~7%
It is a privilege to get the opportunity to play college sports at ANY level.
Take your recruitment seriously.

So you want to play at the highest level possible but you cannot play like this?
Okay, so you’ve got a lot of work to do!
Go to a wall, get to work and while you’re at it, juggle and then juggle more!
This is what it takes

Athlete: Coach… I think I want to quit.
Coach: Okay. Then let’s talk about why.
Athlete: I’m tired. All the early mornings, the pain, the pressure. Sometimes I wake up and wonder what I’m even doing this for.
Coach: That’s not quitting. That’s being human. Doubt shows up when you’re close to something that matters.
Athlete: But I’m not even sure I’m good enough. I look around and see people stronger, faster… happier.
Coach: Comparison is a liar. It shows you everyone’s surface but hides their struggle. You don’t need to be better than them. You need to be better than yesterday.
Athlete: What if I never win? What if I give everything and still fall short?
Coach: Then you’ll walk away with something most never touch—truth. The kind you only find when you’ve emptied yourself for something bigger than comfort.
Athlete: So… you think I should keep going?
Coach: I think you already know the answer. You wouldn’t be having this conversation if you truly wanted to stop. You just want someone to remind you that it’s worth it.
Athlete: It hurts, Coach. Some days, it really hurts.
Coach: Good. That means you care. And nothing worth having comes without pain. Now breathe. You’ve made it through every hard day so far.
Most quit before the breakthrough!
Don’t be like most!

There seems to be a lot of debate recently on the necessity/relevance of the dreaded fitness testing in the world of college soccer. There are a lot of reasons these tests are utilized by nearly every college program. I would go so far as to correlate our fitness testing with each of our six core values—CAPPLE.
1. Commitment: we turn away A LOT of good players, by selecting a recruit we are making a huge commitment, issuing a golden ticket to our program. And it’s a 2-way street where they must now demonstrate a huge commitment to us. Taking the summer fitness packet seriously and putting in the work to pass the tests are part of that commitment.
2. Accountability: the women’s soccer preseason is perilously short. If you don’t arrive fit, it’s too late. It’s necessary for us to have measurable results on day 1 to know what we’re dealing with, and holding people accountable to this is part of our culture.
3. Preparation: there will be times that we will not be the biggest, fastest, strongest, or most technical, but fitness is a controllable and we vow to always be the most prepared in that regard.
4. Passion: We talk a lot about playing with Passion and bringing the game alive. This involves things on many levels, but players who have the fitness levels to run down attackers, put pressure on backs and win a ball on a breakaway in the 90th minute when fatigue is high are going to be able to demonstrate more passion than those who can’t.
5. Love: we recently changed from Loyalty to Love because we feel Love encompasses loyalty. This core value is all about our connectivity and willingness to go to great lengths for each other. Having players nearly dragging each other across the finish lines is part of age-old bonding that is hard to replicate in other facets of life. Working hard to pass these tests is a big part of demonstrating our love and loyalty to each other.
6. Excellence: Many will say these tests don’t correlate to performing well on the field, and there certainly could be some examples. We talk about the fact that being good is not enough, we strive for excellent, and having the physical stamina and mental grit to get through these tests sets you apart from the ordinary athlete. Do the work and go be excellent. #WeDoHard #TribeSoccer @WMTribeWSOC

2025’s
Remember it is a meritocracy and hierarchy in terms of playing time at the collegiate level.
The best players play and playing time is not guaranteed.
It is a massive mental adjustment to have to perform at training daily to make the game day roster.
I honestly feel it is one of the hardest transitions to adjust to as a collegiate player coming from club/hs. Attending training is mandatory, but performing at training is a prerequisite to step on the field.
If you have committed and signed, the easiest part is over.
Make your training habits in club and hs be a reflection of who you will be in college.
Compete at everything that you do. From rondos, small sided games, 1v1’s, bigger games, or fitness. That competitiveness will carry you. Coaches want warriors and winners on the field.
