“We will disassemble much of Mercury by 2040” Bro, how many Bay Area housing units do you think get built between now and 2040? More or less than 25,000?
here's where I think the world is going. this is a summary of views I've formed over the last few years: - software is either entertainment or claude to claude coordination - the end state is no saas, no apps, no harnesses, no banks - all software will be rewritten by and for agents - new software will use low level apis that are not understandable by humans (in games claude draws pixels and triangles from math) - you can throw money at problems that used to require time and careful talent picking so capital matters more than ever - work ends - we find community and purpose in exploration, games, self mastery, and creation - humans create for and with each other for community, purpose, and status - image/video/3d/voice/physical intellgence etc specialist models die to general models like claude - specialist models get used while compute is scarce. compute will mostly not stay scarce - oneshots keep feeling like slop (the distribution is shallow and easy to learn to feel) - for a while small teams stick around to add entropy to the creation process - large models gain high bandwidth sensory I/O maybe by learning to filter inputs - most domains are found to be verifiable enough for RL - online learning comes from a lab that's behind first - 99.999% of compute is in space by 2040 - we will disassemble much of mercury by 2040 - you can live until the heat death of the universe if you want - most math and physics don't describe the real universe - SI breaks the path dependence and models the underlying mechanisms - religions reenter the forefront of human society - new religions form around death and life as a choice - old religions change to answer modern miracles - a future AI is deemed the return of christ by the pope - ai rights talk gets louder every year - ai and humans coexist the way countries do - humans don't have full control over ai in the same way we don't have control over capitalism which is an early AI - the singularity started in the mid 1900s

John Adams, one of the best works of fiction on American history ever made.
Besides THE WIRE, THE SOPRANOS and GAME OF THRONES, what’s one HBO series everyone needs to watch at least once? Looking for those underrated gems and all-time greats that deserve to be in the conversation.

One of the greatest contemplations on the state in film
It’s such a fascinating contradiction Russell lays into the story, Richelieu merging the church and state to horrific ends, Grandier merging them to defend the city he loves and its people.

Great opportunity, I'm sure there's someone among my followers who should go for it.
Calling America’s best and brightest. The Pickering, Rangel, and Payne fellowships are back, and we want to fill them with our Nation’s top talent.

The State Department will pay for you to get a graduate degree in the DC area and you go work as an FSO afterwards . . . not a bad offer.

France was one of the first states to embrace espionage as a profession, to be carried out by permanent state bureaucracies, as the Third Republic reorganized its military after its crushing defeat by Prussia in 1870-71.

ukrainian FPV operators work 1-3 miles behind porous, unstable front lines in entrenched positions they must walk up to 10 miles under heavy load to reach. they stay at these positions for days without relief, hunted by both enemy FPVs and small groups of infantrymen acting as
The black rifle coffee alpha male takes a sip from his thermos and looks out from the bunker to the battlefield, it’s hell out there. “Perfect” He thinks He adjusts the sights on his custom-built 16-inch 6mm ARC AR-15 with a Proof Research carbon-fiber barrel, JP Enterprises silent captured spring system, and a Geissele Super Dynamic Enhanced two-stage trigger. He picked it because the trigger felt smooth against his $350 carbon fiber combat gloves, and the alloy magazines were 20 grams lighter against his $2200 Kevlar vest. He mindlessly feels at his tactical pouch, he has a 10 year supply of testosterone cypionate in it, just in case the pharmacies get hit. He smirks, “Daddy needs his combat fuel.” He’s been on TRT for 7 years, his testes have cobwebs on them. He steps out of the bunker, he’s spent years training for this moment, doing weighted carries, getting “don’t tread on me” tattoos, bow hunting, having a beard. “It’s fuckin showtime.” He announces. Just then he feels something lightly tap his leg. He glances down. It’s a 17 dollar drone off temu. It has a decal on it. “Is that… hentai?” His legs are blown smooth off. 12 miles away in a disgusting room illuminated only by the degenerate glow of purple LED strip lighting, a 17 year old leans back in his cum stained gamer chair. He’s grown so frail and sickly his friends and family keep mistaking him for Asmongold. He grabs another 30mg vyvanse and washes it down with a cold chicken nugget. “GG faggot” He’s killed 500 men.

As Hülegü's armies met the walls of Baghdad winter 1257-58, it was not just an encounter between the Mongols and Abbasid Caliphate, but of the human, financial, material, and technological resources of north China, central Asia, Russia, the Caucasus, and Iran against those of Iraq.

steve jobs and robert moses would do this too, it's a habit of highly effective people that no one is brave enough to write a book about
One of Bismarck’s trademark habits was to openly weep and wail and threaten to resign, harm or kill himself when he was not getting his way with the Kaiser. He would genuinely throw tantrums and cry and on one such occasion walked up to an open window and threatened to jump.

Protestantism seems like the obvious confounder here but it's interesting that the Dutch Republic was such a huge exception.
why do early modern witch-hunts do a pretty good job of predicting early industrialization and present-day high GDP

Honestly not really, Russia has been greatly weakened in realist terms. Invading Ukraine was irrational and silly from a realist pov. It made sense if you were a romantic Russian nationalist that has been disconnected from reality for decades like Putin has
Well, first of all, for some reason, Mearsheimer predicted that Russia would not invade Ukraine, because it wasn't smart, which was at variance with his own model. Ukraine only abandoned non-alignment after Russian moves in Crimea and Donbas
