Three weeks ago, we gathered for the Gene Lay Institute’s Tissue Inflammation Workshop: Peripheral Neuroimmunology of Tissue Inflammation – sensing, circuits, and repair. Thank you to speakers, trainees, and attendees for an inspiring day of scientific exchange and discussion!
Where can curiosity-driven research lead you?
Our Vice Director, #ArleneSharpe, joined fellow @Harvard alumni panelists to share her scientific journey with undergraduates. This event marked 100 years of Harvard’s Biomedical Sciences Tutorial Program.

The Gene Lay Institute was pleased to welcome Pierre Miossec, MD, PhD, of the Institut Universitaire de France and University of Lyon, for a seminar on CD74, a new molecule involved in IL-17 production at the inflammatory site.
New genetic variations linked to autism discovered by @UofT researchers. Their machine learning model identified 100s of previously unknown microexons that appear to play a role in autism. Gene Lay Institute member, #MartinHemberg was part of this work.

Great science happens when we come together!Â
Last week members of the Gene Lay Institute community gathered for our monthly science meeting, featuring presentations Dr. Caroline Sokol and Dr. Isaac Chiu.
From sharing new findings to exchanging ideas and feedback, these meetings are an important part of fostering collaboration across our community. Thanks to everyone who joined and contributed! #GeneLayInstitute #Immunology
A new immune atlas reveals how disease-associated gene variants actually cause disease. Our Vice Director, Ramnik Xavier and Mark Daly co-led the team that built the atlas by analyzing 1000s of genes from a large-scale study, now @Nature. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
We’re officially underway! The Gene Lay Institute’s Tissue Inflammation Workshop has kicked off, bringing researchers together to explore the peripheral neuroimmunology of tissue inflammation—from sensing and circuits to repair. We’re looking forward to a day of exciting science!
Mammalian genes can combine to generate functional chimeric mRNAs & proteins that were previously unknown. New research from co-led by Harry Kane & Olivia Venezia, uncovers trans-splicing events that form functional protein-coding chimeric mRNAs during inflammation & immunity.
Now published in @NatImmunol : nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
New research led by #XinxinChi, recipient of @GeneLayInst fellowship, shows that the fate of peripheral Tregs is pre-determined by TCR origin+specificity, & antigen-presenting cells.
Now published in @ImmunityCP.

New publication in Immunity! Researchers from the Gene Lay Institute, led by Dr. Caroline Sokol and Dr. Xueping Zhu, identified mTORC1 as a molecular switch that helps sensory neurons “remember” allergen exposure—driving heightened itch and allergic responses upon re-exposure.
Honored to welcome Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, the 2025 Nobel Laureate, for a fireside chat at the Gene Lay Institute with our trainees. His pioneering work in regulatory T cells has transformed our understanding of immune tolerance. Watch the highlight below.

We’re proud to congratulate Gene Lay Institute member Joon Hyuk Lee from the @QuintanaLabHMS on receiving the Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholar Fellowship! This prestigious recognition celebrates his outstanding contributions to biomedical research. Congratulations, Joon Hyuk!
Celebrating 34 years of the Kuchroo Lab and honoring our Director, Vijay Kuchroo! Past and present lab members came together on Cape Cod to celebrate decades of discovery, collaboration, mentorship, and hard work.A wonderful reminder of the lasting community built over the years.
Join the Gene Lay Institute on October 2nd for our Tissue Inflammation Workshop! Hear from leading scientists in neuroimmunology, present your research in our trainee poster session, and connect with experts. Register today!
