Regarding UBI: What’s easier to believe? That the tech companies automating millions of jobs will happily hand over trillions in profits to fund a permanent global UBI. Or that they’re selling the promise of a free paycheck just to pacify the public until it’s too late to resist?
If no company or government or individual has signed up to fund a multi-trillion-dollar UBI, why are so many convinced it's right around the corner?
A free Iran means a much more peaceful world. Ending the Islamic Republic of Irans control over Iran is THE fundamental step in the right direction.
Nothing is more important at the moment than the Iranian uprising. If you’re spending time online filling feeds up with anything other than this you are an agent of suppression - just like the evil that has kept Iran in a cage for 47 years, and just like the evil that has caused unhinged division among all of us in the West. The would-be victory of the people of Iran will be a victory for civilisation, including you. Start investing in the right things. Or shut up.

Journalist Karen Hao says AGI is not scientifically grounded; it's a quasi-religious movement in Silicon Valley
Since we still don't agree on what human intelligence is, companies like OpenAI can shape the definition of AI to suit their needs
"the belief that AGI is coming soon is faith, not evidence"
Sounds about right to me:
"And on the whole existential doom thing, I don’t really believe that AI has much risk of ending humanity as we know it, but the people building it do. So maybe I should take them at their word?"
Somebody please convince me otherwise, but lately I find the techno-optimism seems hollow.
The pace of AI progress is increasing, as far as I can tell. Apparently, AGI is imminent.
And can somebody tell me exactly what concrete progress is being made towards ensuring that it will “benefit all humanity?”
I think people are mostly looking out for their own fortunes. To be honest: the normie view, which I take to be something like, “a small group of people in San Francisco aim to become fantastically wealthy and aren’t really concerned if they put everyone else out of work in the process” seems more and more convincing to me.
And on the whole existential doom thing, I don’t really believe that AI has much risk of ending humanity as we know it, but the people building it do. So maybe I should take them at their word?
I think AI is pretty incredible. I’m optimistic about its abilities to do increasingly amazing things. But when you have guys who look like comic book villains talking about how they want to buy galaxies...it’s a bit discouraging from a broader social perspective, don’t you think?
I’d love to see some of the secret treasure trove of brilliant Dario essays that Anthropic is apparently sitting on. Maybe that would make me feel more optimistic.
Anyways, it’s hard to really blame anyone. If one guy doesn’t do it, the other guy will. So why not? In a gold rush, you’re supposed to mine for gold. That’s the point.
Okay, that’s enough rambling for now. I would really like to be convinced otherwise. I’m open minded. Maybe it is actually the most ethical gold rush ever in history and we’ll end up in a space opera utopia where all diseases have been cured and we can live in edenic peace forever. You tell me.
We're racing towards a future with AI that 95% of humans alive today would not choose IF they fully understood the changes it may bring.
A different perspective on AI and jobs — Alberta Tech's blunt take
"Nobody’s replacing your job with AI just to wheel you around like a pampered princess in WALL-E.
If AI takes everything, you’re not getting free hover chairs. You’re out on the street doing the one manual job a robot kept screwing up — like pushing grocery carts back because the bot kept denting cars and insurance was cheaper with a human."
She argues the "zero jobs" scenario is unlikely — but if it happens, society won’t restructure to benefit most people. You’d face poverty, not utopia.

I had to double-check my GPS to make sure I didn't accidentally drive through a time machine. $1.59 a gallon! 🏎️💨
At these prices, I’m filling up the car, the lawnmower, and probably a few water bottles.
AI CEOs admit job losses are coming on a scale we can’t imagine. They haven't asked if we want this. They’re building a dystopian future, telling us to "adapt" with UBI while they hide in bunkers. Why do 10 people decide the future for 8 billion? We need a vote, not a lottery.

People need to wake up to the enormous threat posed by AI. While it can be a useful tool to obtain information quickly, it will also wipe out millions of jobs, destroy aspects of original content and blur the lines between fact and fiction. It’s a dystopian nightmare in waiting.
The promise of Crypto isn't that you'll become rich through it. It's that we'll be free. That's why I LOVE the #Quai project. It can do this.
