Also good to point out nice collaboration between folks in epi (AL, SP, EC), disease control (YL) and genomics (KW, ZN, KI, BP, HP, TC, DP).

link elifesciences.org/articles/7… Kudos to two graduate students in Pollock laboratory, Kristen Wade (now at UCSF) and Hamish Pike, who really dove into their part of this.
New schistosome genomics review paper out in @elife today with Andrea Lund, Kristen Wade, Zachary Nikolakis, Kathleen Ivy, Blair Perry, Hamish Pike, Sara Paull, Yang Liu, Todd Castoe, David Pollock, and Elizabeth Carlton. AL nice thread below:

The Denver program to send social workers instead of police (STAR) has responded to over 2,200 calls low-level/intox/MH calls. They have never called for police back-up due to a safety issue. Never. Think about that.

All quiet on the Western front...

Curious how many will infer what I mean with the reference...
No one knows what will be the exact mutational profile of the next variant. But! There is a way to estimate the boundaries of it’s genomic alterations : International effort for longitudinal sequencing of immunocompromised patients with chronic infections.

We just opened a call for two PhD students to join the @THEELabTeam in 2022. Please share or apply!
I thought I would quote this in case I can induce any protein structure function evolution people who might follow me to put their thoughts in
Replying to @davidenard
It is tempting to think that this is due to fluctuating fitness for N events, and possibly the need to coevolve as part of process for full substitution. Will be interested to hear as this data comes out.

There are some exciting opportunities (postdocs) to join our lab working with Prof. @judith_breuer and Prof. Richard Goldstein. If you are interested in viral genomics/bioinformatics, have a look! Some fun work on SARS-CoV-2 (NIHR Panoramic study): atsv7.wcn.co.uk/search_engin… 1/3

Would be interested in anyone's thoughts on this. Is there a commitment (or over-commitment) to levels in studying mechanisms of protein evolution?
Nothing in principle against phil of mechanisms. I just don't share its commitment to an ontology of biological levels. To me levels are epistemic tools, resulting from the techniques we use to observe, intervene upon, and manipulate phenomena at various scales.

💥I’m recruiting a post-doc!!💥Interest in transposable elements a must. Background in mouse development, stem cells and/or genetics and genomics highly desirable. 2-year position; applications close 6th December. DM me for more details. Please RT! seek.com.au/job/55035412?typ…

I'm probably in a grumpy mood about the state of scientific publishing, but this strikes me as similar to complaining that the big problem with the anti-vax conspiracy cult is that they don't spell out vaccine.
This quoted post is unavailable.

This tweet would be more convincing if they did a machine learning analysis to back up their feeling.
When a cancer genomics paper (in a good journal!) says "We used the R program for normalization and data analyses," I get a sinking feeling that I cannot trust these results #bioinformatics_matters
So, without really understanding underlying cult aspects (thought acrobatic dance), tix pre-pandemic, went to Shen Yxx show recently. Left feeling unclean. What evolution group should I donate to to make myself a better person in response? @sse_evolution ? @systbiol ?
Kindness does not always have to be about making grand gestures. Kindness can also be about making small gestures consistently. Thank you to those that do even if I don’t always follow your example. #KindnessMatters

Excited to see that our review on evolutionary conflicts between viral proteases and the host immune system is out! frontiersin.org/articles/10.…. This was a great team effort, led by the fantastic @BriBerryTea and @lizfay20, and an outstanding group of undergraduates in the lab.
