What happened after 2010? Seem like Austerity has lead to the rich staying rich and the poor really suffering doesn't it? We could fix this. It's left like this because fixing it would be "expensive". British society is broken. xitter.gq/jburnmurdoch/status/17…

Some people have responded to that chart with "That can’t be right", or "We can’t be worse than America". I’m afraid the chart is right. 15 years ago the UK’s record on homelessness *was* not too dissimilar to other developed countries, but things have rapidly deteriorated.

As of tomorrow I'm going to stop using Twitter. This site has been a crutch (and doom spiral generator) for me for too long. I'm on Bsky if anyone is fussed. Take it easy everyone.

The four day week thing is absolutely mad isn’t it. So much evidence to support it, but we are just absolutely determined to be miserable instead

Big Issue founder John Bird @johnbirdswords has got it worked out. Homelessness is a political choice – and this Labour government, same as the last Tory one, lacks the political will to deliver prevention solutions to a growing crisis of street homelessness.
🚨 Big Issue founder Lord John Bird has stormed out of a parliamentary inquiry into rising rough sleeping, telling MPs: “I don’t want to be part of a farce.” 💬 @johnbirdswords criticised ministers for not focusing enough on prevention. Find out why. ⬇️ bigissue.com/news/housing/lo…

Think about the amount of time wasted considering what this guy has to say when - like innumerable equally weird and tiresome public figures - a simple “they’re just reactionary wankers who love eating up dumb bullshit they want to hear” would’ve covered it all twenty years ago.

A genocide has become background noise, just a thing that is constantly happening. Horrific levels of normalisation

As if more proof is needed that in our society threatening capital/money is one of the worst things you can do...
An individual who had been loading illicit streaming services on to so-called “Firesticks” has today been sentenced to three years and four months in prison. ➡️ preml.ge/d9ntqhpi
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Jonathan Edge, a father of two from Liverpool made “at least £15,000”, from programming Firesticks to allow said content to be streamed. The length of the sentence was likely influenced by the fact he was on license for a previous serious offense, and his defiance of warnings liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool…

Longer sentence than people who were doing pogroms a month ago

Every time there’s a major scandal in the UK a blindfolded person in a newsroom throws a dart at a board with Megan Markle, Prince Harry and Jeremy Corbyn written all over it.

We MUST listen to the words of people like @thelizcarr on the assisted dying bill. Our state apparatus has a long way to go before the people it ostracizes feel safe enough from such powers to legitimise them.
“We’re talking about coercion almost on a state level.” @thelizcarr argues that legalising assisted dying risks giving disabled, terminally ill and elderly people who ‘feel like they are a burden’ the impression that they have ‘no choice’ but to end their lives. @AndrewMarr9

This is why America is fucked. 41% have medical debt, 650k are homeless, 60% live paycheck to paycheck and Elon Musk is on track to become a TRILLIONAIRE. Tax his ass. Nobody should even be a billionaire never mind a TRILLIONAIRE. I think he’ll get by just fine with 999 million.

This is perhaps the worst possible situation. This dude is a Christian Zionist that believes Israel needs to fulfill a Biblical prophecy to begin the end times. He has advocated for the US to pay for Israel to settle in the West Bank and said Palestinians don’t exist.

This is, I think, the problem with most contemporary things. Once you look into it at all, you realise it’s system after systems, all interlinked, need to be wholly decapitated, as in, the whole upper strata is rotten, both structurally fucked, and populated by psychopaths.
What's so awful about the John Smyth case is how many institutions decided not to report his abuse to the authorities. The Irwene Trust (which ran the holiday camps) ran their own internal investigation in 1982, and found that Smyth had abused at least 22 individuals. They removed him from involvement in the organisation, but didn't pass on the report's findings until 2013. Winchester College, in 1982, banned Smyth from school premises but didn't report him to the police. And then you've got Justin Welby, who's rightly resigned, who didn't formally report John Smyth in 2013. There were so many opportunities to bring this man to justice. And each one of these institutions chose not to do so.

sorry, grief is extremely hard and I will never judge her, but I will judge you, the internet did not kill her daughter, transphobia did, the kind your party allows in it's ranks, that the media spews daily. it is the most abhorrent opportunism to use her grief for this
It was a privilege to meet Esther Ghey recently, and to know that she backs the SaferPhonesBill.co.uk She’s shown such courage & grace despite experiencing the worst thing a parent ever could. She’s now dedicated her life to ensuring other children are safe online.
