The trumpets sound their opening fanfare, bright and bold, and it doesn’t take long for Loper fans to recognize what’s coming next.
The melody takes off from there, propelled by a catchy rhythm, punchy brass and spirited countermelody that gives musicians a little extra room to show off.
More than four decades after Ron Crocker composed the UNK Color Song, also known as “The Blue and the Gold,” those first few notes remain unmistakable.
First performed during homecoming in 1980, the Color Song has become part of the soundtrack at UNK, heard at athletic events, parades, freshman convocation and commencement.
And its history is about as UNK as it gets.

Let's take it back to 1968. My dad with 2 touchdown receptions, but Diller upsets Elk Creek with a TD in the final 20 seconds. ... I'm guessing postgame sorrows sipped away afterward with a few Elk Creek Waters at Village Tavern.
