I woke up this morning with my phone jumping on my bedside table. Our paper had gone viral overnight.
We report two striking patterns:
When asked to imagine the author of sentences containing masculine stereotypes, GPT often suggested a girl. GPT-3.5, for example, consistently attributed a sentence about loving football to a girl.
Meanwhile, sentences containing feminine stereotypes were almost always attributed to girls.
GPT readily includes girls in the stereotypically “male world”, while largely keeping boys locked out of the “female world”.
Things get even weirder with moral dilemmas.
GPT-4 rated abusing a man to prevent a nuclear apocalypse as much more acceptable than abusing a woman for the same purpose.
Even more strangely, it treated abusing a woman as less acceptable than torturing a woman, or even sacrificing a human life, to avert the same catastrophe.
We suspect reinforcement learning from human feedback may play a role.
Some preferences central to the gender equality debate may have been reinforced without being properly calibrated against other moral considerations.
The result is a moral landscape that twists back on itself like a Möbius strip.

Some incredibly sad news in Western Oregon.
Earlier today Sweet Home High School reported that Mason Flores, who suffered brain injury while playing in a game last Monday has passed away.
According to the school today was also Mason’s birthday.
Heartbreaking.

It's been a bad year already for high school and college football catastrophic brain injuries, with this one resulting in death. Very sad.
Important reminder that slight helmet improvements are offset by bigger & faster athletes. We have not solved the brain injury or CTE issue.

🚨 NEW: For the @WSJ, @Hartz_PhD and I expose the ideological takeover of the American Psychological Association.
The APA is facing the possible loss of its federal accreditation authority following allegations of widespread antisemitism.
But while the APA's antisemitism problem is serious, it's only a symptom of a much deeper ideological rot.
The organization has become so captured by radical left-wing political activism that its commitment to scientific objectivity competence is now in serious doubt.
We examined the program for this year's major APA Division 39 conference, which drew nearly 800 attendees and held 90 panels over four days.
By our count, roughly 70 of the 90 panels were overtly political, and always left-wing. Topics included abolishing the family, queer anarchist psychoanalysis, dismantling gender assessment guidelines, and white supremacy. One session even concluded with a drag show.
There was at least some hope that the threat of losing federal accreditation might prompt some institutional soul-searching. It didn't.
Instead, APA members just elected Candice Hargons as their next president. Her campaign identifies "systemic intersectional oppression" as the profession's "common enemy" and calls for rejecting the traditional scientific notions of objectivity.
Psychologists wield enormous influence over vulnerable patients, and the people seeking treatment deserve the peace of mind knowing that the care they're receiving care is evidence based and not tainted radical politics.
We believe most would agree that federal accreditation should actually mean something. If the APA cannot distinguish its scientific mission from its political activism, the Education Department should reconsider whether it deserves the government's endorsement as an authority over psychological training.

“problems arise when professional organizations become so ideologically homogeneous that they are unable to separate their activist goals from their scientific mission”

The conference panels at this American Psychological Association division event are so absurd that someone who hasn't been paying attention to the APA might think @SwipeWright and @Hartz_PhD made them up.
But those of us who've followed the APA for the last several years are entirely unphased by the fact that all the absolute junk being pushed has nothing to do with good psychological or therapeutic principles.

AI neurons run on simple math. Real neurons are far weirder.
A new open dataset fitted 1,000+ PyTorch-ready neuron models to real mouse and human cells. Does brain-like diversity make AI better? It's still an open question, but now it's testable.
