The Globe and Mail asked a bunch of policy wonks for their ideas to improve our tax system. Mine: A "like-kind exchange" to get new rental apartments built in Canada rather than the US.

Breaking: Newly found data shows greedy U.S. developers began hoarding completed homes in 2006, and hoarded twice as many by 2007.
Strange that they decided to get greedy right as buyers disappeared.
All they needed was the Eby unsold condo tax and we could've avoided the Global Financial Crisis. Can't believe policy makers never thought of that.

This is really smart. The federal government is now allowing full capital expensing on 2/3rds of capital investments by businesses to incentivize investing back into companies, rather than sitting on dead money.

Buying a house that faces the right way is an absolute game changer.
We wanted:
- big windows in our kitchen/great room and clear space facing east to catch the sunrise when we wake up
- big windows in the bedrooms facing west to catch the sunset
- a back deck in the east so when the sun was hot in the afternoon we would have shade
It all worked out perfectly. Think about these things before you buy. Simple stuff that makes a huge difference.

You may have noticed that I have been quite vocal about the problems in Canada - this is because I want to see them fixed. But you have a group of people in this country living behind gates thinking everything is ok because their wealth from housing and equities or even an inflation adjusted defined pension plan that have buffeted them from poor policy. Many of these people voted for Trudeau and still think nothing that government did was wrong. I come from families that parents and grandparents did things for a better future for their kids and grandkids. Why can’t we return to this mentality? Why the NIMBY and selfishness? I just don’t get it.

Canadians…
- innovate like crazy
- take tons of risk
- are entrepreneurial capitalists
- build big companies
just not (enough) here.
why?
this should be a five alarm fire for policymakers in canada
517 american companies started by canadians. $414 billion raised. almost 9 in 10 of them went to school in canada
incredibly, 216 of these founders went to waterloo…. and half of these companies were started in the last 2 years!

The Moon would establish a foothold beyond Earth quickly, to protect life against risk of a natural or manmade disaster on Earth.
We would continue to launch directly from Earth to Mars while possible, rather than Moon to Mars, as fuel is relatively scarce on the Moon.

Elon Musk just announced a major strategic pivot for @SpaceX: the company is officially shifting its primary focus to building a "self-growing city" on the Moon.
The logic is centered on speed. While Mars missions are restricted by orbital alignments every 26 months, SpaceX can launch to the Moon every 10 days. This allows for much faster iteration and development.
@elonmusk estimates that a lunar city could be achieved in less than 10 years. In contrast, a similar presence on Mars is now projected to take 20 or more years to establish.
Mars remains on the long-term roadmap with work potentially starting in 5 to 7 years, but the immediate priority is now "securing the future of civilization" via the faster lunar route.

Marc Andreessen on why we shouldn’t encourage people to be entrepreneurs
“The idea of being an entrepreneur has been a romanticized concept. There used to be TV shows talking about how fun it was. And people ask questions, ‘How do we encourage more people to be entrepreneurs?’ And my answer was always: no, we shouldn’t do that. People shouldn’t be encouraged to do something that painful. They should do it because they really want to do it. In fact, they should do it because they can’t not do it.”
Marc continues:
“It’s tremendously painful. Most of the experience of being in business as a startup is being told no. You need all these things: employees, financing, customers. Then you go around all day long asking people for those things and they tell you no. Half the time they don’t even respond. And then just when you think you get it working, a new competitor emerges and just starts punching you square in the face. The minute you think your product is working, there’s a problem in it, and you have to do a recall. It’s just this constant rolling horror story.”
