We demonstrate that electrochemical control of Scholl reaction can differentiate arenium cation and radical cation pathways, providing the experimental basis to re-evaluate previously proposed mechanisms for certain substrates.

We made another π-molecule of Möbius topology, using the Scholl reaction! Our most recent Angew. Chem. paper reports the divergent synthesis of a Möbius N-heterocycloarene and a Hückel N-heterocycloarene from a common macrocyclic backbone. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Happy to be involved in editing this special issue, which showcases many interesting π-molecules.

We made a writhed Möbius nanobelt. It differs from the known Möbius nanobelt with a twist of 180 degree by incorporating a writhe (or a crossing) due to [7] helicene.

We made a key fragment of carbon schwarzites. Its triple helicene precursor exhibits a high absorption dissymmetry factor.

Our most recent JACS article demonstrates molecular orbital tuning (or molecular orbital engineering) that modifies the frontier molecular orbitals of an organic semiconductor without changing its shape and molecular packing in the crystal structure. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac…

We made a 9-memered ring, which is surrounded by 6 benzene rings and 3 furan rings. It stacks in the crystal like saddle-shaped potato chips, showing remarkable pi-pi interactions. @angew_chem

Be afraid be very afraid of black flames! In flame tests excited electrons in sodium in table salt emit almost monochromatic yellow at 589 nm. A low pressure sodium lamp also emits the same λ. The flame also absorbs that light & appears black. #spookychemistry 🔥

Radical-radical coupling and radical-mediated coupling approaches toward monolayer and bilayer graphene fragments! We also observed an unusual 32-center-2-electron covalent π-bonding. Paper was just published in @NatureSynthesis. @TianyuJiao223 @zhesuntju

Negatively curved molecular nanocarbons contain up to six heptagons. We have synthesized them through the Scholl reactions of macrocyclic substrates.

Have polyacenes really been synthesized? I'm not convinced by the characterization with solid NMR, FTIR and other methods. Don't forget pentacene and larger acenes easily dimerize and are oxidized by molecular oxygen.
