Bancada do PL no Congresso manifesta "total apoio" a Flávio Bolsonaro

Of course Flávio Bolsonaro is under investigation in a case overseen by Moraes. That has been the repressive story of Brazil for the last seven years: if you meaningfully oppose the government or Moraes and his court allies, you run the very high risk of being targeted with criminal investigations, prosecutions, and other punishment: just as happens in all oppressive systems where legal power is abused to punish government critics. Critics of Moraes and then Lula have been persefuted this way since at least 2019.
Flávio Bolsonaro ran against Lula, and Moraes is targeting and punishing Flávio one day after the election. That's exactly what one would expect in an authoritarian climate. Having those who run against a regime targeted for punishment is a hallmark of a repressive legal system.
Meanwhile, Moraes himself is not officially under investigation solely because Flávio Dino — Lula's longtime political ally, whom Lula appointed to the Supreme Court — intervened to block an investigation into Moraes's relationship with Vorcaro, all to ensure the public stayed in the dark until after the election. That investigation would have examined why the Moraes family received the obscene value of $R 200 billion from a corrupt billionaire banker only for Moraes to then delete all of his communications with Vorcaro as the banker asked about how and when to flee Brazil to escape justice (the behavior Moraes cited to order others preventatively imprisoned). Thanks to Flavio Dino, that's not being investigated.
But if you want to talk only about those formally investigated, let's talk about Lula's son, Lulinha. His passport hasn't been seized. He's free to travel. That's why he's living a life of mysteriously funded luxury in Spain. Why hasn't his passport been confiscated or invalidated on the same ground as Flavio's? Lulinha is more than a flight risk: he already left Brazil.
Another person who was had been formally investigated was Lula himself. But his passport wasn't seized until after he had been convicted by a trial court and had that conviction upheld on appeal: something that has never happened with Flávio.
I know and deeply respect that you are one of the nation's leading Brazilian legal specialists -- which is why I appreciate your generous suggestion that I first consult some of your esteemed colleagues before speaking further about these matters -- but nobody needs to have gone to law school to recognize the obvious double standard here. You politically like one side and dislike the other, and so you are happy to see them treated differently.
But ultimately, if you think it looks good for Brazilian democracy to have Moraes -- denounced as authoritarian by numerous international commentators -- to seize the passport of the presidential candidate who ran against the sitting president just one day after the election, in circumstances for which I have been unable to find any precedent in the democratic world, then I think we see things very differently. I don't think that's how most people believe free and fair elections, or free and democratic countries, should function.
