If you have spent much time in theological discussions, you have probably heard the idea that Jesus descended into the earth, emptied a holding place called Abraham’s Bosom, and carried all the Old Testament saints up to Heaven. When we open our Bibles to check the text, a very different picture emerges. ​The phrase Abraham’s bosom appears in only one single passage in the entire Bible: Luke 16:19–31, in the account of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Jesus uses it to describe a state of comfort and rest for Lazarus after death, separated by a great chasm from torment. That is the entire biblical record on the phrase. Scripture never states that Jesus descended to Abraham’s bosom to empty it, nor does it say He transferred Old Testament believers from an underworld chamber to the Third Heaven. ​To build this theory, people often pull isolated verses out of context. Ephesians 4:8–9 refers to Christ’s incarnation and His triumph over demonic forces, not an underworld rescue mission. 1 Peter 3:18–20 specifies disobedient spirits from Noah's day, not righteous patriarchs. Matthew 27:52–53 was a local miraculous sign in Jerusalem at the resurrection, not a global relocation of souls. ​The elaborate story of Jesus breaking down the iron gates of Hades, binding Satan, and leading Abraham and the patriarchs out by hand comes directly from a 4th-century apocryphal text called the Gospel of Nicodemus, which is also known as the Acts of Pilate. ​This text is not included in the canonical Scriptures of any major Christian tradition- not even in the 81-book Ethiopian Orthodox canon, which is the largest canon in Christendom. Instead, this apocryphal story was absorbed over centuries into medieval Roman Catholic literature, Eastern Orthodox liturgy, and popular European folklore like The Golden Legend. Over time, people assumed it was in the Bible because they grew up hearing it taught as tradition. ​We have to distinguish between what God actually revealed in His Word and what comes from ancient extra-biblical imagination. Luke 16 shows that God’s people have always been comforted in His care after death, and we do not need apocryphal fables to add to the simple truth of the Gospel.
