Europe is making great progress electrifying commercial transport, well ahead of the US, but China remains in another league. Across Jan–Sep 2026, electrically chargeable trucks captured 5.3% of new EU registrations, with sales growing 49.8% YoY. Meanwhile, China's new-energy heavy trucks captured 38.1% of domestic sales, growing 64% YoY. September alone reached 50.3% market share, with sales up 37% YoY. That's 7.2 times the EU's market penetration over the same nine-month period. And the US? Just 0.11% of new heavy trucks were electric in Q2 2026, according to the ICCT. The figures aren't perfectly comparable across vehicle classes and periods, but the enormous gap is unmistakable. Europe is accelerating, the US is lagging badly, and China is demonstrating just how quickly heavy freight can electrify when economics, infrastructure and industrial scale align.
