ISrael's systematic liquidation of the medical leadership in Gaza: Israeli Airstrike Kills Renowned Cardiologist in Gaza Dr Marwan Al‑Sultan, the Director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, was killed today in an Israeli airstrike. According to his surviving daughter, Lobna Al-Sultan, the airstrike specifically targeted the room her father was in, killing Dr Marwan, his wife, his sister, his younger daughter, and his son-in-law: “A missile was dropped on his room exactly, on his place, on him precisely. All the rooms were fine except for his; the missile hit it precisely.” The family was renting the apartment in Gaza City after the Israeli military forcibly displaced them from northern Gaza. Dr. Marwan was a leading figure in Gaza’s medical community. He served as a Consultant in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Al-Shifa Medical Complex and was one of the only two remaining heart specialists in Gaza. During the past 21 months, Dr. Marwan worked tirelessly, continuing to care for patients despite repeated attacks on the hospitals where he was working and the crippling shortage of medical supplies. Dr. Marwan was also an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University of Gaza. He played an important role in training future generations of doctors, and his killing marks a major loss for medical education in Gaza. One of his students described him to HWW as the backbone of the hospital: “He knew what was going on with all the staff. He would ask the nurses one by one about how they were doing, about their children, about their spouses. All the young nurses and doctors, he would not leave anyone out; he was like a father to everyone. May God rest his soul, he was so good and a human being before anything else.” His killing is part of a wider pattern. As of today, Israeli occupation forces have killed or detained the directors of all the hospitals in North Gaza. The director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr Ahmed Al-Kahlout, and his fellow acting director, Dr Hossam Abu Safiya, are being held in Israeli detention. They have been detained for 569 and 188 days, respectively. The director of Al-Awda Hospital in North Gaza, Dr. Ahmed Muhanna, has been in Israeli detention for 564 days. The death of Dr Marwan Al-Sultan is a catastrophic loss both to the medical community and to Gaza as a whole. He is the 70th healthcare worker to be killed by the Israeli occupation forces in the past 50 days. Israel’s lethal targeting of healthcare workers is not only causing a horrific loss of life but also obliterating their decades of lifesaving medical expertise at a time when their skills could not be needed more. Description of the attack: Attack categorisation: Attack on a healthcare worker Date and time of attack: July 2, 2025, between 14:00 and 14:30 Gaza time Military Actor: Israeli Occupation Forces Type of attack: Airstrike Target: 3rd floor of a residential building in Tal Al-Hawa Neighbourhood, Gaza City Civilians reported deaths: 5 civilians killed Cause of death: Heavy weapons and explosive munitions Method of emergency medical transfer: casualties were transferred by neighbours via a small truck and an ambulance. The Hospital where death was confirmed: Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza Place of burial: Gaza port, in a mass grave For contact: Website: healthcareworkerswatch.org Email: [email protected] [email protected]

New report from @hrw and @HCWWatch documenting the torture of Palestinian healthcare workers. 310 healthcare workers have been kidnapped by Israeli forces since October – many while working. Many have been held for months in what @btselem has called “torture camps”. From this report – “None of the healthcare workers said they were ever informed of the reason for their detention or charged with an offense. All said that they were stripped, beaten, and blindfolded and handcuffed, for many weeks on end, and pressured to confess to being members of the Hamas movement with various threats of indefinite detention, rape, and killing their families in Gaza.  One paramedic said that at the Sde Teiman detention facility he was suspended from a chain attached to handcuffs, electroshocked, denied medical care for broken ribs caused by beatings, and administered what he believed was a psychoactive drug before interrogations. An ambulance driver who asked not to be named said while he was being held with dozens of other men in large a metal “cage” near the Israel-Gaza border fence, he saw guards beat to death two men, one of whom he recognized, with metal bars.” Healthcare workers describe being denied critical medical care and witnessing others being denied care –with some dying due to beatings and torture. Read the full report here: hrw.org/news/2024/08/26/isra… All of our medical associations, medical leaders, and governments must act to stop these crimes; and all kidnapped Palestinians- including healthcare workers – must be released. .@AmerMedicalAssn @CMA_Docs #NotATarget #CeasefireNow #FreePalestine @FranceskAlbs @CraigMokhiber @drtlaleng

Dr. Khaled is a talented surgeon and incredible person who I had the pleasure of working with in his training. He cared deeply about his patients and operated until the last moment. Israel arrested him and is almost certainly torturing him. They must release him immediately!
This is Dr. Khaled Al Serr. He’s a general surgery specialist at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza. After more than 20 days under siege by Israeli forces, there have been reports that soldiers abducted him and 8 other doctors. He hasn’t been heard from for more than 34 hours.
