I'm currently working on massive panoramas of our skies. They're more work than traditional astrophotography images, and are forcing me to learn a lot about the craft.

Here's the uncropped photo from the recent Saturn occult. Since I was so zoomed in, the moon had to be stitched together from 107 panels, each of which was a stack from 2,000 images. This painstaking process is necessary to produces the high level of detail across the entire pic.

This weekend, the ringed planet reaches opposition. That means it's orbiting opposite to the Sun, so Saturn will appear brighter in the night sky – be sure to look up!
ALT This image shows Saturn tilted slightly downward, giving a view of its rings. The planet has atmospheric bands ranging in different shades of brown and cream. The rings are white and gray, with a fairly wide, black gap visible between the inner and outer rings. Two small white dots below and to the right of Saturn are moons.
