A student needed prompting to explain his choice of colours for an Art assignment.
I made the mistake of switching from fairly monotone communication to ๐ถ โTell me Wwhhyyyy!โ
Before this Grade 5 could give an answer, the whole class replies, โAinโt nothinโ but a heeaart ache!โ
As a prep teacher, I have reached the point where I apparently have 16 names, according to how my students address me:
- โMs. Venn.โ
- โTeacher.โ
- One of the 13 classroom teacher names.
- โMom.โ

While prepping one of my students for a spelling test today, we had a moment of joy:
I learned that a great way to motivate a kid to write lowercase โpโs (when needed) is to lightly write โpooโ on the margins of their practice page if they use a capital P.
The power of humour.
Man, these textbooks are really out of date. Itโs been, what, ~200 million years since North America and Africa were part of the same supercontinent? ๐
Working with kids, I have yet to see a drag queen cause trauma to a child.
I canโt say the same about kids whose fathers commit spousal abuse.
Perhaps story time with drag queens is one of the many ways to confront toxic masculinity.
After a protest at the Coquitlam Library over โdrag queen story timeโ - โฆ@ConniSmudgeโฉ tells #SteeleandVance - โItโs hard to hate up close.โ Amen. 8pm โฆ@CHEK_mediaโฉ โฆ@jodyvanceโฉ
Elementary teaching means interrupting your lesson on colonialism to privately talk about โhealthy choicesโ to the Primary student who just grabbed a long hair off the carpet and put it in their mouth.

It currently hurts on my right side to laugh/cough. Clearly my efforts to boost morale by joining yesterdayโs Grade 7 dodgeball face-off should have been preceded by a decent stretch session.

Iโm a Teacher On Call in Canada. Today, I had an Intermediate student ask what I thought about her idea for a barrier to hide and protect everyone in a classroom during a school shooting.
Kids should not feel unsafe in their schools, nor a need to have these conversations.
Teaching Lesson Learned, #762:
If you offer to seal Primary kidsโ oil pastel art with hairspray, they are quite motivated to invest in their work. (Whether itโs the indication of teacher investment in their work or just the aroma of the spray outside the class, it works well!)
One hell of a Monday:
- Catalytic converter stolen again (Cost=$300+ & 2 weeks+ for repairs).
- TOCing for a class that was *not* on their best behaviour.
- Coffee lid brokeโฆtrashing some teaching supplies.
As Garfield might agree, Iโm owed one awesome lasagna.
Some delightful gents surprised me with the removal of my carโs 12yo catalytic converter. Iโm all for updates in the name of efficiency, but I just wish they left behind more than 30ยข on the pavement, seeing as itโll cost me at least $300 to replace the part.

First grade is wild. Youโre learning how to be a human, how to write things down, how to manage friendships and follow rules, and all the while everybodyโs teeth are falling out all over the place
To the driver this evening who was occupying โ 3 feet of the oncoming lane, Iโm sure my Kindergarten students will happy to share their colouring books. I hear they are a great way to learn how to stay between the lines.
