The Yankees had an .084 wOBACON and .408 xwOBACON last night, a difference of -0.324
That's their biggest underperformance of the season by over 50 points, and comfortably the biggest underperformance ever in a postseason game.
As if Rasmussen needed the help!

Willson Contreras just heavily insinuated there is too much data being used in the Red Sox organization. Asked if Red Sox pulled Sonny Gray too early, he twice did the “lips sealed” motion.

Did a comprehensive dive into how well run differential correlates with a team's record both on the season and from the first 81 games to the next 81 games (or in this case, to whatever's been played).
Turns out Run Differential is just king still lol and @YankeesFiles comes out with a DOMINANT victory
Though taking:
OPS (hitting) - OPS (pitching)
Is also pretty effective. Though what's about as equally effective, if not slightly (insignificantly) more is Run Differential in games decided by 10 or fewer runs — eliminating those blow outs.
I looked at a VAST range of metrics/run differentials to try and exclude blow outs. I took:
- run differential against starting pitchers only
- run differential against relief pitchers only
- run differential in games decided by 2, 3, 4, 5, ...., 10 or fewer runs (excluding true mop-up duty blow outs)
- run differential in games decided by 2 to 4, 2 to 5, 2 to 6, ...., 2 to 10 runs (excluding blowouts and 1-run games)
- median game hitting OPS minus median game pitching OPS
- xwOBA hitting minus xwOBA pitching
- win percentages in games decided by 1, 2, 3, ...., 10 or fewer runs
.
.
and some other metrics
I looked at how these are predicatively and how these are descriptively within the same seasons. Win percentages in games decided by 5, 6, 7, etc..., 10 or fewer runs correlate as high mostly because there's a VAST proportion of every team's games played that fall within a 5 or less run differential. So in practice, these win percentages in games decided by *insert a lot of runs* or fewer are almost 1 -to -1 images of teams' actual records.
What's interesting though (and what was already basically known):
one-run game W%s don't tell a good story of how good a team is nor do they do a good job of predicting how a team will be in that same year.
In fact, this gets truer (as you'll see) as you look at win percentages in closer and closer games.
Win%'s in 4-run or fewer, 3-run or fewer, 2-run or fewer, and 1-run games all have lower correlations to a team's record than actual team's records.
However 5-runs or fewer W%'s seem to do a good job of correlating to a team's record, in fact better than the team's record itself.

lol the reactions to Passan & Torre have made clear that sports fans do NOT want sports reporters. they want sports PERSONALITIES who speculate on rumors and are then judged on if they guessed right.
they want their entire information ecosystem adjudicated by Cold Takes Exposed.

Better late and thorough than early and inaccurate. I talk about things when I'm comfortable that I know the material. This was a completely foreign subject that warranted time to understand and present in a way that would be accessible to fans. Your impatience is not my problem.

Spencer Jones visited Missouri in December for a business trip — the same one that, years earlier, changed the trajectory of Aaron Judge’s career.

I spoke of a rumor yesterday on TMKS that Anthony Volpe would not play 2B in the minors. Sounded unlike him, so I checked further today and there is absolutely no truth to it whatsoever. He never refused to work at second. Will speak more of it today at 1 pm @ESPNNewYork.

I really feel for Hal. Every time he makes that $100 million payment to the City of New York, his business only increases in value 8 times that figure. (Forbes now values the Yankees at north of $8 billion)
Hal Steinbrenner said it is "not fair" to assume the Yankees make a profit.
"I don't want to get into it, but that's not a fair statement or an accurate statement. Everybody wants to talk about revenues. They need to talk about our expenses, including the $100 million dollar expense to the City of New York that we have to pay every February 1, including the Covid year. So it all starts to add up in a hurry."

Trent Grisham is the third best FA OF available by a wide margin in an offseason where a lot of teams will be vying for outfielders.
I think tendering the QO is a no-brainer and I think he'll get a good deal somewhere even after declining the QO.

I've noticed a major news outlet — a well-staffed one at that — is now using AI articles multiple times a day to inflate its Yankees/MLB "coverage" (among other topics). It's disheartening & a disservice to readers, but sadly, slop like that is only becoming more prevalent.
