In 1862, two armies fought for weeks over an island in the Mississippi River. Island No. 10, near the Tennessee line, was fortified with Confederate guns to hold the river.
Today you can't visit it. The river washed the whole island away.
Yall follow along I have decided to give a play by play each morning of what is said at the Coffee Club. Made up of a group of 77-83 year old men in rural Mississippi..
A good dog teaches a man things he didn't know he needed to learn.
What's one thing your dog taught you without meaning to?
The deadliest single shot of the Civil War was fired in Arkansas.
June 1862, St. Charles, on the White River. A Confederate cannon put one round through the Union gunboat Mound City and hit her steam drum.
Scalding steam filled the boat. Over 100 men died from one shot.
They patched what they had instead of buying new.
Shoes. Roofs. Fences. Each other.
Nothing got thrown away easy. Not even people.
When the law was worth a damn, a posse would’ve formed and justice would’ve been served.
AUSTIN MAN slams into a stopped minivan at 103 mph on Mother's Day, right in front of a cop, and kills a fire captain hours after his fifth son was born. DA Jose Garza's office asked him to pay a small fine.
Marvin Taylor was on his way to pick up his four other boys so they could meet their new baby brother. He was sitting at a red light on Koenig Lane when a Dodge Durango doing 103 in a 45 zone slammed into him and threw his van 150 feet. He died pinned inside.
The officer found the driver, Rodney Bremby, with bloodshot eyes and slurred speech and stench of alcohol.
He was charged with intoxication manslaughter, which carries up to 20 years in prison. A judge revoked his bond twice while the case was pending, and both times he was back out within two weeks.
On Monday he got 10 years of probation, community service, and $535 in fees.
Five boys have lost their father, and the man who killed him just had to pay a small fine and promise not do it again before going back home.
No chainsaws. Pacific Northwest fallers stood on springboards notched into the trunk and pulled crosscut saws 10 hours a day. One giant fir took a full day to drop. Bunks crawled with lice. Trees snapped without warning. They built the West by hand.
Hard seasons don't ask permission.
They show up and stay a while.
You don't have to beat them. Just outlast them.
Well just left the store and the talk amongst the coffee club was how it took Fred (79) all week to cut and split a cord of firewood. Noteworthy all the guys giving him shit are his age and older.
In 1866, Jefferson Davis's brother sold his plantation to a man he once enslaved.
Benjamin Montgomery bought Davis Bend, Mississippi, and set out to farm it himself.
A year later, the Mississippi River cut right across the bend and turned the whole place into an island.
Time to take these dog on a little ride up to store. Have gather the local intel while there from ol man coffee club.
Dark out. Cold floor. Nobody's watching, and that's the point.
What you do before the world wakes up is who you really are.
