I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “problem.” The trolley works just fine, no?

System design is basically: Slow database? Add a cache. Too many requests? Add a load balancer. Tasks taking too long? Add a queue. One server struggling? Add more servers. Repeated failures? Add retries. Traffic getting expensive? Add a CDN. Data getting huge? Add database sharding.

Sending this to my CTO so I can get more token spend
Anthropic rewrote its Messages API in Rust. Zero Rust devs on the team. Claude wrote the code. Humans wrote the plan and checked old vs new matched on real traffic. CPU dropped 40-50%. Pretty sure "never do the big rewrite" is dead advice. @katelyn_lesse on @latentspacepod

Today I wrote a complicated script on the fly to restore service to 52 users, so now they can watch porn on their phones on America’s #1 high speed network

The Brewers regarded smoking cigarettes before games as a good luck charm and their motto was ‘if we smoke heaters in the cage, we will smoke heaters in the game’ Christian Yelich on this: “You walk by the cage and see the cigs lit and you’re like, the boys are ready to rock.” (Via @JeffPassan)

iMessage is lowkey a hack built on top of APNS. Each message is sent as a push notification to each iOS device. There’s no “iMessage backend” for receiving or listing messages. This is why they sometimes appear jumbled or missing across devices. Airlines leave a port open on their firewall for push notifs, so iMessage work as a side effect of push notifs working. WhatsApp, Messenger etc also engineered their clients to take advantage of this hole. As long as APNS is unblocked most messaging apps work. Airlines are incentivized to keep APNS unblocked because otherwise push notifications would fail for their own apps. Because it is just one persistent connection to Apple, there is no way for them to blacklist or whitelist the apps that are allowed to send or receive push notifications. Attachments fail bc they are sent as external links in the APNS bundle, but can’t be downloaded because opening the link requires more ports to be unblocked (80 and 443 usually). This happens if you buy the paid WiFi or spoof the MAC address of a whitelisted device.

CEO OF OREO: “I would advise that everyone eat 50 Oreos a day. Maybe even 100.”
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

they did surgery on a mouse
Last night an AI agent performed brain surgery on a mouse. We gave it 19 gene therapy vectors in a spreadsheet, a mouse model of epilepsy, access to a motorize surgery rig with cameras and one goal: reduce seizures. It picked the drug. It picked the brain region. It derived the coordinates from three papers. Then it drove the stereotaxic arms into the brain and injected 250 nanolitres while watching the entry site through the rig camera for bleeding. A licensed vet gated every irreversible step and held a physical kill switch to stop the AI agent. Thread on what it decided, what it saw, and the moment it refused to let me override it. [Writing this on the spot out of excitement, but I've been 18hrs in front of my laptop coding and coordinating this, so keeping it brief and descriptive, more cohesive thoughts on this soon...]
